The words of the Soviet Anthem have been changed a few times for political reasons, and most recently to transform it into a Russian Patriotic anthem (dropping references to Communism and including religious references). Here is a unique version sung by Paul Robeson back in '43. Some of the old-school communist lyrics (which are heard here in translation) were softened after 1947: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcqLlCg9Kzk#noexternalembedHere is the flavor that is most familiar to anyone who came of age in the USSR in the 60s and 70s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLcc19mt4eA#noexternalembedUntil the '90s, the Anthem was sacred. Altering it or making light of it was unheard of. That's one reason this next version is remarkable. It was recorded in 1991 for a satirical TV show, which is why this performance is often called a parody. But "parody" is not really a good term for what this is. It's complex, like a lot of Soviet art had to be. I think "ironic" is a better description. In this recording, the original old-school communist lyrics of the 40s were resurrected, and the effect is chilling. The performers are an amazing A-list of 1990s Soviet pop music, and yet there is very little information about this video on the net, and no official list of performers that I can find.
