I got a question wrong on my Excel quiz.  But I actually opened up Excel and did what it was asking and I had the right answer.  Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong or I'm crazy.  What do you guys get for this...

In order to add a column of data between existing columns in a worksheet
one will place the cursor in a cell:

A. directly to the right of where you would like the column, then select Insert > Columns

B. directly to the left of where you would like the column, then select Insert > Columns

If it's 2007 and you choose insert then column you get some 2 or 3 d chart.

you should rightclick the column on the right from which you want to insert and the choose insert.

You put your cursor in a cell DIRECTLY WHERE you want to insert the new column. Then you perform the insert. The contents of the columns beneath and to the right of the cursor get shifted to the right (because they cannot be shifted to the left), and a blank column is inserted under the cursor.

So, if you want to insert a new column C, you put the cursor somewhere on column C and do the insert. Not to the right of column C, which would be column D, nor to the left of column C, which would be column B. You put the cursor right where you want the new column to be.

I suppose if you imagine that the new column is actually being inserted into the tiny little space between columns, then you can say that your cursor is placed to the right of the tiny space where the new column will appear. So if you think of it in terms of "I want to insert a new column between B and C", then you would put the cursor to the right of the space between B and C.

So I suppose the answer is "to the right".

If it's 2007 and you uninstall it and go back to using 2003, which is much MUCH better.

On the other hand, if you think of an existing column as "the column", and you say to yourself, "Self? This here column needs to shove over one," then you would place the cursor to the left of where you would like the column.

So the answer is "to the left".

2003 is easier unless you have more than 65,000 rows on your sheet. Then it's not easier.

BEFORE 2007:

client: Can you send me your current inventory?

ivan: Sure. We have 755,000 active items. How do you want it?

client: Can you send it in Excel?

*ivan gets sick feeling in gut at prospect of importing 755,000 rows into Excel in 65,000-row chunks*

AFTER 2007:

client: Can you send me your current inventory?

ivan: Sure. We have 755,000 active items. How do you want it?

client: Can you send it in Excel?

ivan: Absolutely! Do you have Excel 2007?

client: No.

*ivan gets sick feeling in gut at prospect of breaking a 755,000 row sheet into 12 separate 65,000-row sheets so he can save it as a goddam .xls file*

So life got marginally better, I suppose.

I see your problem, ivan. Try it like this next time; see if it works any easier for you:

BEFORE 2007:

client: Can you send me your current inventory?

ivan: Sure!

ivan sends inventory in format of his choice; customer never being the wiser

AFTER 2007:

client: Can you send me your current inventory?

ivan: Absolutely!

ivan sends inventory in format of his choice; customer never being the wiser

I would have selected answer choice B, but it is, as ivan pointed out, a poorly worded question.  The answer should be "Exactly where you want the new column to be inserted thereby pushing all existing content to the right"
