Should you be doing this at HN?

I've had a network card go bad on me before. It wasn't exactly like you described, but instead it wouldn't work in one computer, then when I switched it into another computer, it would start to work, slow the system down almost to a hault, and then eventually stop working. Another thing I noticed was that there was a lot of "fake activity" on the card, meaning the light kept on blinking, but nothing was coming in or out of the NIC, and the switch's activity lights showed nothing as well.

Another thing I forgot to mention, perhaps the PCI slot is fucked. Try the card in a different slot.

Could a PCI slot be fucked on an integrated card?  I bought a new NIC the other day, but got beyond sun-burned at a water park (whee!) so I'll install it tonight.

Installed it last night.  XP won't recognize the card, and the CD that came with it won't recognize the card either.   It just reinstalls the integrated card.  I think I'll be calling Dell today.

Try disabling the integrated card in your BIOS first, then try installing the PCI one.  Sometimes that works...

I'll give that a go.  I'm about to break down and contact Dell tech.

Well, I did what Demo said and it didn't work.  Then I turned my computer on this morning and it went online.

I bet Windows XP disabled the network connection, and then when you disabled it in the BIOS, started it, and then changed it back, XP enabled it once again. That would be one possibility.

I had a similar problem the other day...

Try shutting down your PC and then unplugging the power from your modem. Wait like five seconds and plug it back in. Reboot and whenn all your modem lights are green, with one flashing amber light(I use Surfboard.), open IE and try accessing the page you need.

Edit:Day late....dollar short.  :(
