maybe shut down MS-DOS because thats what Doom is running on. That might do it. If not maybe try it in Safe Mode again. :?:

I feel the need to mention that there is no MS-DOS in Windows XP. It's emulated.

Wow this entire thread took a question that should be very simple and totally made it complicated for no reason.

What are we talking about here? Is the purpose of this thread to help you remove the icon from your desktop? Is it to make the game work? Are you looking for a copy of the doom.exe file? Is it to define the term degauss? Is it related to hacking? Do you like bananas?

Ahh Demo you may be right but unlikely seeing as it is burned from an original copy of The ultimate doom, but uhh what is the mydoom virus and WHAT DOES DEGAUSSING DO!!!

It appears that you were the victim of a fairly cruel prank.  I don't think he actually meant for you to degauss your monitor.  I hope for your sake you didn't actually do it.

Degaussing pretty much ruins your monitor and video card by sending a low voltage current attenuation through both, normally for the purpose of clearing residual electrical charges.  However, if one isn't there, it usually sends too much current through the main capacitor of the monitor, shortening its life significantly.

You'll be shopping for a new monitor in probably a month or so.

And when the monitor finally goes, it'll take the video card with it.  Usually when monitors finally stop working, the video cards burn out because they have no place to send the signal.  The best course of action is to replace the monitor before it actually burns out... that way you don't have to replace your video card too.

I work in IT for a living.  I've seen it a million times.  We just went through about 15 monitors where I work because of crap like that, and we had to replace the video cards in almost every case too.

Judge, that wasn't very nice to tell him to do that.  He couldn't possibly know how damaging that would be... he's just a kid.

Fortunately, I don't think he actually did it, so he's probably okay.

But you should still be ashamed of yourself.

While it was cruel of TheJudge to tell you to do that, common sense should have told you that your monitor had nothing to do with it. I'd never do anything to my computer without some understanding of why it was necessary or relevant.

That sucks man.

I feel for you.

Well, I'm sure you can get a new monitor for under $300.  Just make sure you don't buy one with a "degauss" button on it.  It's way too easy to bump something like that on accident and ruin another one.  Seriously... I've done it a couple of times myself.

Look on the bright side. When you unplug your monitor, you won't see that icon on your desktop. I guess I did solve your problem after all.

You're a bastard, Judge.  Did you know that?

I don't know why I bother even trying to help people around here.

What a fucking asshole.

OK I'll be nice.

Go to the PC store and ask specifically for a "degausless monitor". If they know PCs, they'll know exactlly what you're talking about. If they look confused and ask questions, don't waist your time with these idiots. Go to another store.

I have a couple extra lying around (my dads in the compy business) so meebe I'll just steal one of this...But that was cold judge...very cold

So If I get a new monitor I can save my Video card? That would be nice

Oh my God!!!

I'm hurt that you would think I would do anything to harm your hardware intentionally. When you did degauss the monitor, did you turn it upside down first like I told you to?

Oh well then you're fine! It only does stuff if you turn it upside down. That makes a huge difference. Don't worry about it. Everything is cool.

Also, research the term degauss on google just for kicks.

Demo just gave me a good push and I went with the flow. I was about to let him in on the whole joke. That's why I asked that he look up the term.

If he did turn it upside down, that reverses the polarity on the shadow mask, thus causing the RGB guns to misfire. The overvoltage alone wouldn't cause the problem, but the reverse polarity is what sends the spike down to the AGP VGA Adapter but your OS should detect it and send an Improper Bus Parity Trap Flag to your IO Subsystem, which acts in conjunction with your AMI static bytes to shut down your system. He should be been A-OK if he defrags his static IPs ASAP.

No no no... This was funny, but the joke is over.

Listen, we were just pulling your leg here. You'll see that happen once in a while in here with all sort of people. Don't worry, nothing we said and nothing you did can harm your computer.

Degaussing:

Occasionally, a color monitor develops a discoloration or color purity problem on part or all of the screen.  Typically, the discoloration follows a
semicircular pattern around one side or corner with several bands of different color distortions, like a rainbow.  Sometimes the discoloration involves the
entire screen, but that is rare.

This rainbow may be caused by an externally induced magnetic field that has permanently magnetized some material in the monitor.  The three CRT
electron beams are guided to their appropriate phosphor dots by a magnetic deflection system.  The beams pass through a shadow mask near the phosphor
surface assuring that the red beam hits the red phosphor, the blue beam hits the blue phosphor, and the green beam hits the green phosphor.  If some nearby
component (frequently it is the shadow mask itself) has become sufficiently magnetized then the beams receive an undesired deflection, and will not land
on the appropriate phosphor, or will land partly on one color and partly on another.  The result is an impure color that arcs around the magnetized
component - a rainbow.

Motion is an important clue to this problem.  If the rainbow moves it is not being caused by a permanent magnetization but by some alternating magnetic
interference in or near the monitor.  If the rainbow does not move then it may be caused by permanent magnetization and degaussing is necessary.  Moving the
monitor to another location will determine if the interference source is internal or external.  Does the rainbow disappear when the monitor is moved?
If so, the magnetic interference is coming from something near the monitor's normal location.  If the rainbow travels with the monitor the problem is in
the monitor and degaussing may be required.

Degaussing removes permanent magnetization by introducing an alternating magnetic field that is stronger than the offending permanent magnetization.
This field will energize the magnetic domains of the material and induce an alternating magnetic field.  Then, if the amplitude of the the alternating
magnetic field is gradually reduced to zero, the material will be demagnetized.
