First off, if you want it, you can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

If you've already installed it, post your horror stories here. I've got it downloading right now and am debating on if I should actually roll it out or not.

I'm going to ignore it for as long as I possibly can.

The install took about an hour on my work desktop, a P3 733. Upon reboot, I was presented with a few menus asking if I wanted to turn on Automatic Updating. Other than it taking a long time to install, and not being asked if I wanted to back up the files it was replacing or not, it just did it, I don't see any harm done so far.

Heh, I have 98 at work.  I wonder when it's going to try to infest my new laptop at home...

IBM told their employees to not install SP2. It was for the reason that some software wouldnt work with it appearantly. Probably doesnt affect me a bit but it still made me consider if I'm gonna install it or not. I decided to wait a couple of weeks and read reviews before I infect my machine with more MS code...

Windows Update still hasn't triggered for my comp. I'll probably wait on installing it too. Even though I don't see any real harm in doing so. It sounds like it has quite a few good things mixed in the obligatory bad things.

Aw, nuts. It'll be forced on me here at work. I can't turn off Automatic Updating.

I have it turned on to download then tell me when it's ready to install. Home and here at work. The dumb ass thing here at work is that our desktop background is locked and I can't change it. Yet I have admin access to the workstation.

Yes, I know there are registry keys I can edit to set the desktop, it's just not worth the hassle.

If you're keen on telling Windows update to piss off and not grab SP2. Well at least for 120 days.

It also says that we'll be SP2 free until the 16th if you're not running a SP2 beta version already.

Microsoft Windows Xp Sp2 - Installation And Tweak
« Reply #9 on: August 14, 2004, 03:51:06 AM »

No matter what you've heard about Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, it's always a good idea to get a first-hand look. That's what Gavin Ballard did over at TweakTown, and in this article, he runs us through the new features, the install process, and a few tweaks to help you get SP2 up and running with the maximum performance possible.

I agree Todda. I plan on installing it after setting a restore point just in case it pooches something. I don't expect any real problems since I *gasp* own XP. I had no problems with SP1 when that came out.

I'll check that article out and see what they say.

It should be quite good overall. I'm particularly interested in the updated firewall. I can't stand the current one.

SP2
« Reply #12 on: August 17, 2004, 01:23:51 PM »

Actually, my duties here at work revolve around Microsoft. Server 2K and Exchange 2K. Microsoft sent me the beta about 3 months ago and I haven't had any huge problems with it. It has a lot of security features built in which is cool. But this is my job. This is my executioner.

I would rather be working in UNIX or Linux myself. But I have to work where the money is to support my family and Everquest habit. And don't even talk about running Windows emulation from Linux. That destroys the whole meaning of Linux. Being Microsoft-less.

I'm not sure whether it's funny or not that there are a large number of Microsoft products on that list...

It's one of the reasons that SP2 was delayed so long. I find it very funny personally. I like how there are a boat load of games on the list as well.

You know, the only thing that actually suprises me about that is that it took so long to find them.

I like the pop up blocker they've added to IE now. That's a start.

I've installed it at home and at work now. And it seems to be ok. No issues that I can detect as of yet.

Except I forgot to open the ports for VNC. oopsy.
