Atapi 9 - System Freeze
« on: September 20, 2004, 07:48:32 AM »

Hey guys, I am running Windows XP sp1 on a new Dell- and the other day my computer completely locked up (couldn't move the mouse and no programs responded) for about 15 seconds, and then it went away. I checked the event viewer and it said :

ID: 9
Source: atapi
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_TIMEOUT
Message: The device, %1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Explanation: The attempt to read or write data timed out.

User Action: If there is a disc in the CD_ROM drive, it may need replacing or cleaning.

The thing is that there was not a cd in the cr-drive. This has happened maybe 4 times within 2 weeks, and I really need to fix this problem. Please help me!

You probably need a new cd drive. First I would try using a new IDE cable. If it still happens then get a new cd-drive. They aren't that expensive. This is the one I have (DVD Burner)

Or your EIDE interface on your motherboard is flaking out. Swap out the cable first, then if you can get another CD-ROM drive (maybe borrow a friend's or roommate's, just to try it without spending the cash first) try swapping that out.

(And if you're in IT like your profile says, why'd you need to come here to ask this? I'd Google anything before I'd go through the signup process, next time. If you're going to stick around, go introduce yourself in the New Geeks forum, kthx.)

Yes.Oor, if the EIDE interface is the problem, just disable it all together until you get yourself a new motherboard.
