Mother's Computer
« on: November 27, 2004, 01:24:49 AM »

My mother told me that she wants me to build her a computer. All she wants/needs is the tower and I have to keep it as near to $2000USD as I can.(That's after tax. Tax is 8.6% in washington state.)

So I came up with the following list of parts. All parts are bought from www.infotechnow.com, unless otherwise noted. Infotech is a computer store about a hour away from my house. I will be driving and picking up the parts from infotech.

As you can see I have two 250GB sata drives.
I plan on useing them as a raid 0.
Then after making the raid I plan on partitioning  the raid drive
and making a 40 gig partition for the OS and partitioning the rest
as one big drive for videos and whatnot.

One quetion I have is. I understand that SATA has it's own power
plug and does not use a 4 pin power plug.
Will this convert the 4 pin to the SATA?:

Does anyone see anything wrong with this system?

And before someone asks. Yes this is for my mother. And yes
she will not only be useing it, but she will be useing it for
all kinds of video work.

Please write me back and I will check up soon.

Chances are with that power supply that you are buying, you will not need to worry about getting any molex to SATA adapters as it will most likely come with several attached already. It is also dependant on the drive as well, some need the adapter, some don't.

Also, be careful with RAID 0, the possibility of a loss of data doubles since you are using two drives. So having a good backup solution in place is almost a must in your case.

What is your mom going to be doing with this computer. Does she really need 500gb of space and 3 gigs of ram?

Also... (prolly will get burned for this)

Get Intel. They generally last longer than AMDs.
