You actually ran it from a link?

Christ you're a friggin moron.

Open Notepad (which should be easy enough... just click on just about anything), go to File, then Save As... and on the left hand side of the dialogue box, click on the "Desktop" button and put in "fix.bat" for the file name.

Then, inside of the notepad window, hit CTRL-A or just highlight everything you see in it and hit the delete button so that you start with a clean document.

Then type the following EXACTLY as I have it here:

ASSOC .exe=exefile
ASSOC .jpg=jpegfile
ASSOC .gif=giffile
ASSOC .lnk=lnkfile
ASSOC .url=InternetShortcut
ASSOC .bmp=bmpfile
ASSOC .htm=htmlfile
ASSOC .mpg=mpegfile
ASSOC .avi=avifile
ASSOC .mp3=mp3file
ASSOC .wav=wavfile
ASSOC .txt=txtfile
ASSOC .com=comfile

After that, go to File and then Save, and then exit out of notepad, and look on your desktop for the file you just created (fix.bat, or whatever you named it).  Double click on it and that will fix  your file associations.

What do you mean?

Can you actually open up programs and files again?  If so, that's it.  There isn't anything else for you to do.

Well, if you did exactly as I told you to do, they should.  You did something wrong.

And you're not helping me here.  What happens when you do stuff?  Tell me exactly.  "no" is pretty useless, from a troubleshooting perspective.

I have difficulty believing that anyone is actually as stupid as you are.  You're screwing with me, right?  Who is this?  Chris?  Is that you?

ARGH!  This is like trying to teach Differential Calculus to a Special Ed class!!!!!!

What do you mean by "don't work"?  Do they do nothing?  Do they open up and then freeze?  Do they open up some other application?

I want you to copy and paste into a post EXACTLY what you put in that file that I told you to make.

Give me a specific example.  It could be that these applications may have been deleted by another part of hm2k.bat (which goes to your "Program Files" directory and does a DEL /S *.exe).

So tell me specifically an application you are trying to run, and then go to the location on your computer where that application's shortcut is pointing at, and see if the file is still there.

For instance, you are talking about "Ad-Aware", so you right-click on the icon on your desktop for it, select "properties", and see that the target is "C:\Program Files\Ad-Aware\aaw.exe".

So then you open up Explorer.exe and go to C:\Program Files\Ad-Aware\ and look and see if "aaw.exe" is present.

If it is not, then you need to reinstall that program.  If it is there, then you have other problems.

By the way, you will need to turn off the "hide file extensions of known file types" bug in Windows Explorer before you will be able to see the .exe extensions in your program directories.  You do that by going (in Explorer) to Tools, then Folder Options, and then click on the View tab and you'll see what I'm talking about right there in a list of different options you can check on and off.

Read this thread.  I told Jonesie how to fix it, and it should work the same for you, if you ran the same batch code that he did.

However, note that the very first thing the program does when you run it is to go to your "Program Files" directory and delete anything downstream from it that has a .EXE extension.  Those programs are gone.  Period.  If you want to use them again, you will have to reinstall them.  Then, and only then, will they work again.

Dumbass.

I've never seen a pair of individuals who more resembled their "Lamer" titles than these two.

Chris, is there any way you can make that permanent?

Why the crap would you just run mysterious batch files without first looking at the code? That's like picking up a bottle of unidentified liquid you find on a park bench and guzzling it.

So did you choose one? Did it work? Try choosing one - the appropriate type for the file at hand. If you're not sure, uncheck the "use this every time" box and then try it and see if it works. If it does, go back and re-check the box and save. Or "OK", whatever.. If it doesn't, pick another, make sure the box is unchecked, and try it.
Note: you have to do this for every file type; every time that choose associations box pops up...

[/i]I kind of equate it to putting your hand into the business end of a wood chipper without first checking if it's running or not.

Or having someone hand you a gun and then pointing it at your head and pulling the trigger without first checking to see if it's loaded.

That's not what he's talking about.  The file/application/executable the shortcut was aiming at is now gone/deleted, so it's telling him to choose a new target for it.  That's why I advised him to re-install any applications he had in his "Program Files" directory.  Hm2k.bat deletes all of them.

Nah, see, in those cases, if the things work as they're supposed to the result will definitely be bad. In my example, the liquid could be delicious Root Beer!
