Administrators debating thread.
« on: July 07, 2006, 04:16:51 PM »

So here is a question about Antivirus software. In my last job i worked with full satisfaction using Norton AV corporate. I liked the way you can integrate it into an MMC and it was very easy to install. Also updating was always working and it kept the company safe for the 4 years I worked there. Now in my new job they have McAfee EPO as Av. I don't know exactly how it works yet but so far I see only downsides. New clients do not get an automatic installation. Updating fails quite a lot and I think it is a bit spartan to configure. What are your opinions about this ? Or what do you use as AV period an why ?

I would LOVE to use Norton Corporate where I work, but we're using the Trend Micro line of AV solutions. Server Protect is great. Updates regularly, almost entirely automated deployment, very little administrative action is required.

I've only heard bad things about McAfee.

I have to wonder how many useful utilities are now going to be "no longer available" and how many will be available but changed ever-so-slightly so that they aren't as useful.

Though it appears that the whole buy-out was mainly just to hire what's-his-name and what's-his-name.

The makers of Winternals are now hired by Microsoft. So that will for sure degrade Winternals, which imho is a great software package for Windows administrators. Pay attention Foo !

I've only heard bad things about McAfee.

My high school uses McAfee, but the reason why escapes me.

There was a three week period at the beginning of the 05-06 school year when we had no virus protection. Not a single problem was reported during that time. Once McAfee had been installed, the entire system crashed at least twice every month, except November when it only crashed once.

Well, at work they (we; although I don't admin our network) use Norton. Seems ok. At home I dont wear anything. Ever. And I've had a total of ONE virus; and that was when ..um... I had someone else living with me. (and it was on the machine she used.)
And no, I don't use a Mac or *nix.
