Definition of a Geek?
« on: August 18, 2006, 01:14:21 AM »

Hi, I've always been considered the odd girl throughout my life, due to my eclectic interests in both analytical an artistic subjects.  I have a very curious mind and I tend to be consumed with certain projects or endeavors that often overtake my life.  So anyways, I was  disagreeing with an aquaintance about the definition of 'geek' and was told in absolute certainty that I was not a geek.  According to this person, the fact that I'm not into computers or gaming excludes me from joining the geek club.  I must admit I am sort of challenged in this regard since I just barely know how to operate my MacBook Pro and I don't do any sort of gaming whatsoever.

So what do I say to people like this who dare question my geekiness?

There is a plethora of definitions for a geek or a nerd.  Personally, I've always seen 'geek' as a more derogatory term, as the original definition of the word was one who bit the heads off animals in side shows.  I prefer to be called a 'nerd,' it's a more specific term relating to- aw hell, just read these articles from Wikipedia:

GEEK

NERD (it doesn't mention that the term was coined by Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss, to the uninformed), which made its first appearance in his 1950 book, If I Ran the Zoo: "And then just to show them, I'll sail to Ka-Troo And Bring Back an It-Kutch a Preep and a Proo a Nerkle a Nerd and a Seersucker, too!"

Welcome new geek.  Just the fact that you can communicate intelligibly makes you a geek.

You mean that popular people cannot communicate intelligibly?....That statement only makes you a hater and a complexed person by lack of attention from popular people, friends, family and even society on the whole.I am so sorry for you!God bless you!   The girl was wondering if having artistic abilities makes her a geek...are singers or actors geeks?I don't think so...and they are artists...true talented artists are very rare and everybody(with some brain) would admire her/him if they knew her/him!!!!Please do not count both artists and gamers in the same category!!

of course it is not....but popularity means the majority of the people like you..which means you have a variety of pleasant features,a healthy social education and good communication skills :)

You're able to obtain all three of those things without being 'popular'. And popularity's based on perception, anybody can be popular if they believe it themselves.

Anyways, why am I debating with a banned user? And why am I talking to myself?

Hi Everyone :)

I personally think everyone is a geek or nerd in one way or another. I don't believe that it's a bad description or a bad thing and people shouldn't take it so personally.

Just my opinion...

Hmm...I'd say it's most everyone with an obsessive interest in an atypical subject, or just an obsessive interest in ANY subject. I consider a fixated jock just as much a nerd as a computer maniac, just specializing in different fields.

I think if you have to ask if you're a geek, you most likely are one. A geek is anyone who doesn't conform to the sadistic rules of society. xD

I'm a non-conformist, I don't have a tattoo.

Nor do I...but I was thinking about getting a barcode on the back of my neck, and then have it covered by a red  -VOID-  stamp. I'm also going to get a tattoo of poetry smurf.

That is great, I first thought Dark Angel then realized that it's a broader social metcommentary. Good job! I think if I ever get tattooed I'll get a quote from Watchem, V for Vendetta, or the Boondock Saints. The closest I ever came to getting a tattoo was the time I accidentally branded myself with a red hot nut that left a rather interesting pattern on my forearm for a time.
