Why so few "choose-your-own-adventure" type books?
« on: December 22, 2006, 05:34:34 AM »

Why so few "choose-your-own-adventure" type books?

I've always wondered why the "Choose-your-own-adventure" type of books never gained wide acceptance. Why were they largely confined to just fantasy and RPG? And why mostly kid books?

Why hasn't, for example, Steven King made a novel with a "Choose-your-own-adventure" format? He could let the readers guide the actions of the protagonist. Something like: "If you think Paula should run from the Zombie - turn to page 184. If you think Paula should try to kill the zombie with her axe - turn to page 701. If you think she should stand there and scream like an idiot.... etc... etc...

You would think that there would be at least ONE big-name author who would have tried something like that - if only for a publicity gimmick.

Why so few CYOA books? Is there some kind of stupid copyright law that prevents it? Anyone know?

I think good authors do wager the possibilities, but they simply pick out the most exciting plot.

The answer lies in economics.  If there were a market for such a thing, it would be filled.

I think someone should re-write the Catholic Bible and make it a "chose your own adventure" type book.

To have Jesus sent to hell, turn to page 356.

True story my friend.  We only shortlist books that sell.  Otherwise, what the hell is the point?  It's a waste of money.  However, they do sort of ok in the kids' dept, people ask for them enough.  Also, if you want to choose your own ending to the book, write your own damn book.

What about a comic book where you can choose your own story?

How about interactive DVDs? Especially pornos:

"Where do you think Sean Ryan should put it? In her mouth, or somewhere else?"

I like those 1st person pr0n DVDs.  Well, that is to say, I like the 3 minutes that I watched (11 times).

How about a small booklet explaining to me why porn actors of a male persuasion who elect NOT to change their name to some stupid phallic/other innuendo oriented handle always have two first names? It's almost as bad as John Charles Thomas. Then again, I've thought I saw John Charles Thomas in a few 30's stag films, so that could be the crux of the issue.

See, there's a thread specifically for that, so that you don't make a pointless post.
But nevermind.
