Small unknown breed...
« on: May 09, 2009, 07:39:04 PM »

Does anyone have any idea wt7 this dog is? This is a good pic of her face/ears/head; I'm trying to get a good shot of her body with the legs in the pic. Her legs are really short and stubby, and it looks like her head is not the right size for her body; like it's a couple sizes too big, lol. Then the ears are a few sizes too big for the head, lol. She looks like she was bred for hunting small game: short/squat, long body, big snout and huge ears.
  Anyone have any idea?

Looks like a Corgi. Maybe mixed with Daschund just because I've never seen a dark Corgi before.

Originally bred for herding actually.

Herding? Really? This little girl's front legs are only about 6" long. It's hard to imagine her keeping up and not getting stepped on, lol.
My thought was maybe a rat terrier / bull terrier mixed with something else. Still trying to get non-blurred body shots.

Corgi's were bred to "drive" cattle. Because of their small size they are hard to trample or kick. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a 3000 year-old breed, but the Pembroke is more famous and popluar because it's basically a house-dog version of the Corgi. Corgi's tend to be "nippers" and may take a bite out of your ankles during play.

Also, the American Kennel Club sucks for giving detailed histories of breeds, but this will give you a start from a reliable source.
Pembroke
Prembroke history
Cardigan
Cardigan history
 :-P

EDIT: I'm thinking she's a mix with something, and I still want to say Dachsund, but I'm not sure.

I have a tri-colored Pembroke Corgi who's pretty dark.

I meant the black and brown coloring without any white. I've never seen that. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

That cat is Bogarting the picture though.
