Hello:)
« on: July 24, 2010, 10:28:54 PM »

So uhh, I didn't see an age requirement to join. :P I'm 16, male, U.S.A. I'll be 17 in less then 2 months, I'm now a senior in high school. :) I've been interested in computers since i was very little, mostly just computer games though. I have taken web design classes, Microsoft Visual Basic classes, and uhh probably another class or two about computers. This year in school I will be taking Java programming. In 11th grade I started doing volunteer work for my school. I was taught how to take a computer apart and work around inside of it, along with reinstalling operating systems and software stuff. Although for me personally I did it to learning more about computers and fixing them.

Yeah.. Probably no one cares about my life story with computers, but I'm interested in being a member and learning new things here..hopefully :P

Which version of VB?

Funny, when I read about how you were "taught how to take a computer apart and work around inside of it," I flashed back to 9th grade, Moscow PS 76, where I was taught how to take apart an AK-47, clean it, and put it back together. Blindfolded. You know, just in case the Imperialists attacked at night.

The closest I ever got to taking something apart like that was smashing a non-functioning calculator with a mallet my 5th grade teacher kept in the classroom just for that reason.

Welcome, though.

VB 2005/2008, even the express edition, is nothing to sneeze at. It's as deep as you make it.

Hi Welcome! Here's a story for you: When I was in high school, there was one computer course where we would learn to program in basic. Not VB, just basic - in DOS. AH... you're just 17, do you even know DOS???? Anyway... I happened to have the Basic manual at home so I didn't follow the boring school program. I explored my options and decided I would programed music. I took songs I knew how to play on my guitar, transposed your standard guitar tablature into Basic code for notes, and programed a few songs ranging from classical to heavy metal. Of course, this was coming out of the PC speaker as a series of beeps. It was kinda of cool, but could get annoying after a while. So I kept making more and more complex songs and I would program multiple computers and try to start them in sync so that each would play a different part. Long story short, the prof got feed up and unplugged the internal speaker from all the machines in the class. lol!

one= an idea proving that not all of us kiddies are totally lacking in earilier techonology knowledge.

However, having a DOS is damn near impossible. Really, even on newer OS's, is there a point to using DOS? I'd say old games and stuff, but you can install and run in comparability mode.

Unless of course you wanted to compare DOS with something else.

Now that I'm awake and can think about something other than that typo; some people have a certain nostalgia when it comes to playing games on ancient consoles or computers. For someone like me, it's just more fun to run it on the original platform.

Also, I have a DOS because I plan on using it in a modern art display I'm plotting out.

For the average user, no there is no point unless you are interested in the evolution of operating systems and feel like experimenting. Understanding DOS would give you a better understading of windows. In essence, Windows is simply a DOS version wih a graphic interface. When you drag text file A from foler A in to folder B, you're really just executing the following DOS command: "Copy c:\a\a.txt c:\b". When you're make file A read only, you're really running this DOS command "attrib +r c:\a\a.txt +r", and so on. Pretty much anything you do in windows executes a DOS command in the background.

i remember taking this one computer apart, saving all the internal pieces and whatnot, then throwing away the chassis, then putting it back together maybe a year later. it was literally just a motherboard with random wires coming out of it, connecting to other components. a few months later it stopped working for no reason.
