A new geek :)
« on: May 16, 2011, 03:48:43 PM »

Hey!

I've just graduated highschool, and am currently deciding what I want to do after my gap year... I have been thinking computer programming or engineering, or maybe even research in physics, possibly astro or particle, even though I doubt I am smart enough for that (even though I'd love to do it!)

Anyway, I enjoy science fiction (even though the mistakes really peeve me out), I don't really play a lot of video or computer games, and I love to read, especially fantasy, and I also love to write things. I don't know anything about computer programming, even though I want to get down to that during this year...

So, all in all, I think I'm a pretty normal, some-what geeky person :)

Greetings, the me.

Well, you're certainly not lacking in mildly self-effacing egotism. NTTAWWT.

So anyway, if technical errors in SF stories irritate you, how do you stomach fantasy fiction, which consistently violates every law of science ever?

And computer programming, you will find, is just like writing. The words are different, and have both intended and unintended consequences, and syntax is crucial, but the process pretty much feels the same. To me, anyway.

Nothing I have ever written has ever violated every law of science ever. You'd have to be super talented to violated every law in one book. Actually, that would be a pretty cool/fun book.

@Ivan:

Thanks for the insight on programming :)

Also, I ignore the violations of physical laws in fantasy because I regard fantasy worlds (where magic usually violates the laws of physics) as ruled by the laws of magic and physics, as opposed to strictly by physics, as is the case in our world, and in pretty much every science fiction world.

Also, I try not to think about it too much when I read fantasy... I just use the "there are laws of magic!" idea and enjoy the book or the movie.

@Wunderkind: Ah, but the question is: can we even imagine a world in which every law of physics would be broken?

You know those jinn or genies that will grant your wish in the most literal manner possible?

Programming is like that.

The following actually happened in a Hackmaster game session at my house a couple of years ago with one of my players.

Player: So the ring I found in the loot radiates magic, huh?

Me: Yep.  Your Detect Magic spell definitely picks it up.

Player: But I can't tell what kind of ring it is.

Me: Nope.

Player: Okay, I put it on.  Anything?

Me: Nope, nothing.

Player:  Aha!  I say aloud, "I wish I knew what kind of ring this is."

Me: You hear a voice inside your head that says "Wish granted.  This ring was a Ring of Wishes with one wish remaining."

Player:   :x
