Bill O' Who?
« on: August 21, 2009, 03:55:32 PM »

Who is this Bill O' Reilly? There was an item on Dutch tv about how he is bashing our little capitol and how some Dutch guy is reacting to that.

Look on youtube for "the truth about amsterdam" for background info

Who is this fossil?

Bill O'Rly is a minor political commentator. He's actually best known, and well respected, as a connoisseur of fine Egyptian food. You should send him an email asking for his opinion of falafels.

Bill-O's ok.  Enrique watches him (among many others).  Sometimes I find myself yelling at Bill on the TV set "Stop arguing with her, she's AGREEING WITH YOU!!!"

He pitches a hilarious fit.  Enrique and I always bust out the "We'll do it live!!".  LOL.

Stereotyping.

Average American is judging without sufficient background info, has no clue where Europe even is and bends statistics in his favour to win the argument.Bill is living proof. A stereotype American.

The fun part of it all was that Bill's ears were washed with statistics and countered that by mentioning that we do average statistics different in the Netherlands. That was pretty stupid, an average is an average.

That is the movie where this is all about.

Aside from the fact that the most condescending remarks come from people who have never been here,

This Link was an interesting and insightful read.

Well, there's part of the problem right there. Neither Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olberman, Rush Limbaugh, or any others are anywhere near "typical". This is the MEDIA. I'm sure there are programs IDENTICAL to these in the Netherlands, too; except calling the US out of control and in total chaos.
He is one of the top-rated shows more because of entertainment value than anything else.

Saying that the typical American is a stereotyper is kinda hypocritical, don't you think?

Hohohoho

I never said I agree with that opinion. I am just stating where Terahammer's remark comes from.

And 12, actually no.

The official Dutch media is, and that is required by law, as neutral as possible. They are in no way as divided as the US media.Of course you have the left en and right media but the national broadcast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nederlandse_Omroep_Stichting) takes hardly any stand.

There are two things in this world that I simply cannot stand

1. People intolerant of other cultures.
2. The Dutch.

Right; but we don't have an "official US media" nor a "National Broadcast". It's ALL privately owned. If we were to have an "official media"; you can bet it would have so many restrictions on what they could and couldnt say as to be totally worthless anyway. I mean; it would be "neutral", too.
Also, if you had as many people and as much diversity as the US; you would indeed have the same wide split. Not saying you guys dont have some diversity; but here there is virtually every viewpoint on the planet; and they all have the same opportunity to be loud. With so many viewpoints, but only two real political platforms to squeeze into; the divide is of course more pronounced.

National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting System.  Lehrer leaves biases at the door.  And Morning Editition and All Things Considered are pretty free of bias.

NPR and PBS aren't "state entities", though, as I think jeee meant. Surely privately owned media enterprises in Holland aren't subject to some "fairness doctrine"?
If they are then I misunderstood.

Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olbermann, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and of course Glenn Beck--not at all stereotypical Americans, though unfortunately they are some of the louder ones.  As a result, they're heard from much further away than some of the more reasonable, levelheaded Americans.

I work for a center-left think tank in DC, so unfortunately I hear a lot of nonsensical rhetoric from both ends of the political spectrum.  There are good people and lousy people on both sides of the aisle; the sad truth of the human experience is that negative impact stays with us far longer than positive impact.

I'm an American.  I'm well aware of our reputation abroad.  Personally, I think the current president (Barack Obama) is far more level-headed than Bush, his predecessor.  It's difficult to gauge how effective he is in improving our global personality, but from this end, it looks like he's making an effort.

I'm a registered Republican (political right), but in modern politics, I vote Democrat and agree with their current platform.  With international war, a troubled global economy, and a dying planet overshadowing our every move, it's difficult to believe that smaller government and decentralized tactics are effective tools.  With Republican champions like Sarah Palin, it's difficult to associate anything I trust in with the current manifestation of the GOP.

My apologies for the rant.  I guess what I'm saying is, not all Americans are blind to the fact that, internationally, we've made an ass out of ourselves lately.  We're trying to do better.

We've made no more an ass out of ourselves than any other nation.
One thing I cannot STAND is someone apologizing to the world for America. America - in her short time so far- has done FAR more good for FAR more people than ALL OTHER NATIONS COMBINED. And you apologize? ? ? ? ?

Dear rest of the world,

Sorry you're so butthurt about how awesome we are all the time, but we totally understand where you're coming from, even though you're wrong (just another example of how we rule). Maybe if the rest of you combined and did something nearly as good as we did, then we'd have something to talk about. You know English, right?

Love,

America

:slap  "Shot me in the back!  I didn't make you mad, did I?"

I don't know about all that.  America has had its ups and downs like most nations.  Saying that its done far more good than other nations--especially combined--smacks of forgetfulness.  We didn't do much for the African slaves, and I can't imagine the Native American tribes would proclaim our majesty.

In closing--I apologized for my rant, not my country.

This is a website for geeks: surely there has to be someone here with enough math skill to generate a "National Worth" index that quantifies all the contributions that nation has made to the world. How much is human life worth again? Does potential count? How many children dying in a war is undone by the invention of TIVO?

This could be pretty complicated!
