Anarchy / September 15th, eh?

It'll never happen.

Hockey will go on.  There may be some missed games, but they'll never kill the season.

Kahki pants, leather belt, boxers with pictures of a mad scientist holding a glow-in-the-dark rat, grey+black striped Ralph Lauren (I think...) shirt, glasses, brown socks with little black things on them, leather shoes that I got free from Skechers when I used to work for them, wedding band, college class ring.

Political Opinions / Kerry or Bush
« on: August 30, 2004, 12:57:02 PM »
I'm having a really hard time making up my mind.

I sit here, in a swing state, knowing that my vote may just matter.  I really don't know what to do, however.

What I do know is that I am not voting for Bush.  I really think our country needs to send a message to the rest of the world that we don't support the unilateral lunacy that Bush has been spearheading.  The only way to do that, is to vote him out.  Some people argue that we don't need the rest of the world.  I disagree with that.

Bush is also raping our environment.  That bothers me deeply.

At the same time, to quote reimero, "John Kerry has done exactly nothing to win my vote."  I can't get over the feeling that voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.  I honestly don't know if Kerry plans to make things better or not.

I usually vote third party.  I voted for Nader last year.  This year, I don't really trust doing that for two reasons... one, it will help hand the election to Bush, and two, Nader is becoming more of a lunatic every year.

I really wish I could find a good, non-partisan, readable site that would give me factual information on candidates that will make me a more knowledgable voter.  I haven't found much that I can put faith in, however.

It's gonna be a tough decision.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I have a job... but damn.

Fucking user is having troubles with her PC.  Now we're using WordPerfect 8 (current WP version is 12) on windows 2K and XP machines.  Things fucking crash all the time... no surprise.

Well, I did a comple re-install to try and speed up her machine a bit.  Fucking hell, all they do is bitch.  She calls me not 10 minutes after I put the new machine up there to tell me, "I got a program error already."

Well, what the hell do you want me to do about that?  Program errors happen when new OS's are running software that is copyright 1991.  The program is over 10 fucking years old.  I can only work with the tools I'm given.

Damnit!  I can't wait to get my PhD.

Anarchy / I don't mean to sound racist, but....
« on: August 18, 2004, 10:06:01 AM »
Uggg... he did it again.

I have a friend who uses the above phrase ("I don't mean to sound racist, but...") whenever he has something particularly racist to say.

The problem is, he's a really good guy, with a good heart.  He just had an upbringing that makes him somewhat racist, and that'll never change.  And he's not dangerously racist, just rudely racist.  He certainly wouldn't let color of skin determine whether or not he'd help someone out... he just assumes things about people based on it.  His whole family is that way.

The hardest part of the whole thing for me is that he's uber-christian.  If I stub my toe in his house and say, "Jesus Christ!" he or his wife will freak out at me.  But, had I shouted, "Nigger!" (God only knows why I would, but let's just assume there was a reason) they wouldn't even bat an eye.  My view of Christianity says that's just wrong.  If you're to believe the teachings of Jesus and his apostles, that kind of thinking is actually backwards.

There's really no solution, unfortunately.  He's my friend, and he's a good person.  It's a character flaw... and God knows I have plenty of those myself.  It bothers me, though, and it feels good to rant about it.

Why do you care?

Why do people on messageboards insist on finding a fast-track to custom titles, avatars, etc?

Why don't people just have conversations, and try to contribute?

Why did I even read this or respond to it?

Why am I leaving for GenCon tomorrow instead of today?

Why do we have nothing but shitty choices for President in the 2004 election?

Anarchy / Comic Books
« on: August 18, 2004, 08:49:17 AM »
Well, I weaned myself off of them.  Went down to 20 titles, then 15, then 10, then 6 or 7 then I quit.

It really is crazy, but I was addicted.  I had been collecting so long that I didn't want to stop, which was a stupid reason to keep going.

I can't really decide if I stopped reading out of lack of interest or lack of time... but I have a feeling that if I REALLY wanted to read them, I would have made the time.

Yeah, I did that for about a year too. It's quite a silly feeling isn't it? Almost like drug addiction.

Yep... Especially when I was still collecting 32 titles.

Man, this thread almost made me cry.  I finally gave in and cancelled my comic pulls (which I had cut down to 7 titles) three weeks ago.

I've been collecting so long I can't remember when I started.  But I haven't read a single issue in over 2 years.  Was just buying them and not having the time to read them.

Sad how things change.

I just found me this here interweb thingamajig.

I think I'd better introduce myself.  I came here because those fuXX0rz at Hackernetwork wouldn't help me get into my girlfriend's Hotmail account to spy on her because I think she's cheating on me and they just told me that I should try not to post in nothing but run-on sentances and that I needed to work on my speeling.

I also like to point out an alternative to Winzip to people... WinRAR.

Personally, I HATE Winzip.  It's awkward, counter-intuitive in many ways, and annoying.

WinRAR actually uses better compression (I've tested it with some really huge files, and using the RAR format is better than the best compression you can get with Winzip), and I have found is much easier for the average person to use... it doesn't try to extract files by default in some temporary folder that users have to go digging for, it has an option to extract things right where they are.

Plus, the interface is customizable.  You can remove buttons that you don't use, and rearrange things to how you want them, and add buttons that aren't up there by default.  It also has a self-extracting function like Winzip, so you can compress things down to an EXE for your dumb friends who can't figure out how to unzip things (providing you can get an EXE attachment through their email filters if they're at work).

Screw Winzip.  WinRAR is better on all levels.   8)

True, but the guy who created WinRAR didn't drink himself to death like the creator of WinZip.  I like to reward that kind of commitment to one's vices.
