That's "Conky", about which I just commented.  It's retardedly configurable.  To the point where you practically never find any two exactly alike.  Do a Google Image Search for "conky screenshots" some time and you'll see just what some people have done with theirs.  Conky config file swapping is a fairly popular activity among power users.

  I used to set this as the desktop on my office pc and hide all icons and the taskbar to keep
 co-workers from using my workstation.

Yes; it worked. No one could log in.   8-)
