Title: Out of Curiosity...
Post by: Computational on April 27, 2010, 01:35:50 PM
I've noticed how many friends of mine are perfectly fine with discussing software/hardware with me, but the moment they start talking to our non-tech savvy friends, the geek talk dies.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys are comfortable with discussing technology with your non tech savvy friends, or recommending software to them?

If you are, why? If not, why?

I have my theories, but I wanna see what everyone else thinks.

Talking about software works perfectly fine as long as the non-tech people need help with that software. :P

But are you comfortable with just bringing technology/software up in regular conversations? If not, what stops you from doing so?
If you are comfortable, is there any particular reason why?

I just only mention it when it's apt.

Saves me possible un-comfortable moments and isn't that much of a problem with me. ;)

What do you mean by uncomfortable moments?

Like...when people don't really know what to answer? I suppose.

I don't know, you are the one always talking about being comfortable with something. :P

Are you the one starting the tech-talk?  Because, if you are, and the tech-talk dies when they don't talk to you, you may be missing a swing of the clue-bat.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys are comfortable with discussing technology with your non tech savvy friends, or recommending software to them?
Why would I be uncomfortable discussing something about which I'm passionate?

Concur.

Something about the way the queries are phrased is making me think that yet another someone wants us to do their homework for them.

You know, I never really thought about it, but you're right: I am very comfortable talking tech with my tech friends, but have a visceral aversion to discussing tech with tech-ignorant people. I wouldn't have believed it, but I ran across a conversation at a party I happened to be recording because I was wearing a wire for the Feds -- long story. Anyway, here is a partial transcript:

Quote
Me: Dude, check her out.
Tech-savvy friend (TSF): Whoa, dude.
Me: So what would you pick, a date with her, or a Cray CX1000-S?
TSF: Are you fucking kidding me? A Cray CX1000?
Me: -S.
TSF: No contest.
Me: QuickPath Interconnect, man.
TSF: Fat memory.
Me: One hundred twenty motherfucking eight Intel Xeon 7500s.
TSF: A motherfucking terrabyte on board. And you know about the coherency switch, right?
Me: You mean the proprietary feature based on Intel QuickPath Interconnect technology that fucking allows scalability from a single goddam building block of 32 cores, if you're chickenshit, up to a maximum of 4 goddam building blocks for balls-to-the-wall motherfucking computing awesomeness? You mean that coherency switch?
TSF: That's the one, dude.
Me: And not to mention the dual-port ConnectX InfiniBand QDR contro... holy shit, here she comes.
Cute Girl (CG): Hi, guys! What are you talking about?
TSF: Nothing!
Me: I feel really uncomfortable all of a sudden.
TSF: I... uh.. gotta go! (runs off)
CG: Do you know anything about computers?
Me: No! Go away! You ruined everything! (starts crying)

Wow.

I hope this helps with your homework.

Spock it hot.

I don't talk about anything unless they start the conversation, because it makes me sound like a know-it-all.

...Because I know-it-all.

No kidding, Bananaskittles posted a video of him in the TNSFW thread.

Hey, when you're bored at work, you're bored at work. Playing games is a tad too obvious - at least with this I look like I MIGHT be doing some research or whatnot.

That's exactly why I'm here instead of playing Lexulous on FB.
