New Geeks on the Block / Just FYI...

Loving the Vintage Mode. Nostalgic.

Hi!

2
So I finally buckled under to the madness that some of you have espoused and installed Mandriva (KDE) on my desktop and laptop, and I'm stumbling around it like a drunk sailor on leave trying to figure out how to do anything. In general, I'm pretty pleased, so far none of the stuff I've done has broken it, but I haven't done anything seriously complicated yet because, quite frankly, I don't do much on my computer these days. It's an embarrassing admission, but the majority of my time on the computer is spent on (somewhat) serious tasks such as email and web browsing, and the occasional torrent download. No gaming, video editing, crazy graphic mods to the interface, nada. However, I do have a few minimum requirements not yet being met two weeks into my experiment, and when I can't find a way to do them I just bounce back out and into my dual-boot Windows, handle those tasks, and come back a day or so later. This is where I find Linux to be slightly lacking, although I'm betting that's just because I lack understanding, not that the OS or the community hasn't come up with answers to my problems.

This brings up the question- I'm delving in to downloading packages and compiling source and 'make' and 'sudo' and 'apt-get' commands, and I'm finding that those commands aren't there. I have to go and locate the packages that contain them, then install those packages, then i can compile and install the packages that made me want to use those commands in the first damn place. Not good. So this is where I seek some advice from those of you who've been there, done that- What am I doing here? Did I screw up the installation and leave those packages out, or is Mandriva set up to be so newbie-friendly that it doesn't include some of the more complex commands which might wind up breaking things? Or the third option, is this how all distributions of Linux are set up? Do you have to download all your commands before being able to do anything purposeful here?

Am I actually insane?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Smartphones

**This thread has been split off from  BSoD thread **

And since you're blowing it away and starting from scratch, now would be a good time to give something different a try.

No registry cleaners, no BSODs, no viruses, no adware, just a usable computer.
Alright, I'll bite. But what kind of PDA/smartphone support would I have? I'm probably switching to Crackberry in a few weeks, so I don't necessarily need Windows anymore...

New Geeks on the Block / Refreshed
« on: August 16, 2009, 09:06:47 PM »
So I figured since I've been AWOL for ages, I'd reintroduce myself for the benefit of people who joined since I was last active.

Hi. I'm Phyre, otherwise known as Matt. I'm from HN, and I know Detta personally. I like cheesecake and viognier, not necessarily simultaneously. I enjoyed the latest Star Trek movie, but I've always been a fan, so my opinion shouldn't count. I like kayaking, swimming, reading, model making, computer science, and cooking breakfast. I'm a professional mechanic, so don't mind me if I only show up on the weekends- I work like a bitch during the week and have little time online.

I'm a nice guy. If you're nice too, we'll have plenty of fun together.

New Geeks on the Block / Please don't Bann Me...
« on: August 01, 2004, 11:45:47 PM »
Welcome, Bann me. You forgot to start a newbie thread, so I figured i'd go ahead and do it for you. This is the place where you tell us all about yourself and what you like, etcetera and so forth. To kick things off, I'll just ask you a question or two, and you can fill in whatever I don't cover...

First, what is your quest?
Second, what's the meaning behind your screenname?
Third, why are computers cool?
Fourth, what makes you a geek?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Do what?

What just happened? Chris?

Alright, so I'm feeling the need to update this system. I'm currently dual-booting Windows 2000/Redhat 9.0. I use W2k almost exclusively, since I've had several configuration issues with Redhat, and don't have the time to debug. The issues I've had are: inability to configure and use a second video card, for dual monitor support. Inability to hear sound, except for a short window of time which I cannot explain and can't reproduce. Both of these are considered critical issues for me, since I depend on having two monitors, and being able to hear things is essential for any computer.

So I'm faced with a quandary, given the end-of-life for Redhat 9.0- I obviously must choose another distribution to dual boot with, and I have to try to find one with enough native support to be able to work my various widgets. Which leads me to ask those of you who actively use Linux, or just have a store of information to draw upon- which one? Any and all advice is welcome, here...

New Geeks on the Block / Forum Pimp... ?
« on: November 02, 2003, 04:35:50 PM »
Right then. My digital pimp (Detta) said I should start post-whoring here. Some folks know me from HN... or not, I shouldn't assume I'm popular. I'm probably despised. Yay me.

Alright, I'll kick this off with a hey-howdy-d00die to all the forum regulars, a tip-my-hat-and-call-me-Gracie to all the other n00bs, and a link to something kewl, IMO: USNO Time Clock, for all you time-concious folks.

[random thought]
Is anyone else running the Winamp 5 beta? I think it kicks ass- my remote works with it, and it's got support for some of the newer skins too.
