I wish I could say that were the case! I've not even looked at that in months - in fact I've told the company running it to let it die at the end of this month when it was due for renewal!

Sad times :(

Hey there! I thought I'd wander by and post in a random thread. It was fun. I hope it was as good for you guys as it was for me ;)

Do any of you own a figurine (any kind)?
No, but I have two ugly-ass china dogs that the previous occupant left in my apartment.

Playtpus or giraffe?
Platypus.

Great graphics w/ bad plot or text-based w/ great story?
I love a good story, but can't do text adventures anymore. Graphics of some form + Good story.

Thriller or action movie?
Action.

Honey Mustard or Nutella?
Honey Mustard.

Star Trek or X-men?
X-Men.

Wrist or Nape?
Nape.

If you saw a $100 dollar bill in a toilet....would you get it?
No - they don't use those here, and people look at you askance if you try to use a £20 note in most places.

How many books do you read in a week?
Between a half and a whole.

What genre of music do you like?
Pretty much anything, but particularly indie bands.

Is anyone into lolita?
Someone probably is, but I'm not one of them.

If you had a choice would you go on a death defying adventure?
As long as the death was truly defied, yes! Actually, the more risk, the better!

What's one item you always wear?
Boxers. They're probably due their annual wash right about now ...

What's your 3rd favourite color?
Red

Our company made Driver, Destruction Derby and Stuntman (plus a fair few games back in the Amiga days)... I'm not allowed to talk about current projects, but we only do driving games.

gorgeous_si!!!?

Dude!
Hey GSI! This thread is officially derailed.

It's been a while dude! What are you up too?
Howdy fellas ... and, well, everyone! I'm doing good thanks - I'm still making games, but have been promoted to a team lead, which for a while meant I got to boss one guy around and now I have 6 peons to do my bidding. Unfortunately, I now have virtually zero time to do any development and am spending most of my day training them. I'm still a band geek - the band came second at the regionals, so we're off to the finals for the 1st time in 11 years and have been promoted a section too! Generally, life is dandy! How's everyone else doing?

Entertainment / Re: YAY IRON MAN WOOT
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:22:12 AM »
I saw Iron Man this week and just sat there grinning like a little kid! I really loved this film -Bob Downey (the younger) really suited the role, Gyneth Paltrow was appropriately pretty and there were big bangs and things of that nature. I missed the little bit at the end of the credits (didn't know it was there), but saw it online and it made me even more hopeful for the impending sequel (supposedly 2010 ... how am I supposed to wait so long?!)

Edit: Oh, and Stan Lee as Hugh Hefner - nice.

The game-devs have a right to make what they want - it's their business. Games then go through an age-certification process (although I think the US system is a little lacking!) and if it's rated Adults Only then the console manufacturers won't even certify it for sale on their platform.

I don't have a problem with GTA - as Joe said, it lets you do these things but doesn't make you ... Manhunt on the other hand was a much darker game in which you had to kill people in various ways to progress through the game.

I think as long as there's a system in place to help inform the parents' choice (i.e. a clear rating system that works), then it falls on the shoulders of parents to make sure their kids aren't playing these games until they're ready. I seem to remember, when there was the trouble with GTA: San Andreas and 'Hot Coffee', a woman wrote a letter of complaint saying she'd brought the game for her grandson (I think he was somewhere between 12 and 15, but am too lazy to look it up!) but would never have brought it if she'd known it was 'filth'; I'd say the fault lay squarely with her for buying a game that was innappropriate enough without the unlockable content!

Like other forms of media, the games industry will continue to push its boundaries, but right now its the scapegoat just like Elvis, The Beatles, Playboy and even the waltz were in their day.

Quote
From an editorial about game classifications in the UK
...(The Times, in particular, has some wonderful form in this department - back in 1816, it warned "every parent against exposing his daughter to so fatal a contagion". The culprit? The waltz, a new type of "indecent foreign dance" recently arrived from Europe, which the Times judged an "obscene display" more appropriate for "prostitutes and adulteresses". Old habits die hard, I suppose.)

Hey si!  Long time no see.
Hey there! It has certainly been a while ... I think it's about 2 years since I stopped going to HN ... maybe more - it'd been 3 years since my last post here! My post rate is sky high ;)
Cool! I was just in Barcelona for a couple days in May. Reminds me of Chicago.
I loved the city ... mainly because it's warmer than home :)

Hey you guys! How're you all doing?

Life's rocking along over here - I'm still making computer games (happy days!) ... got sent to work in Barcelona for a couple of months earlier this year - awesome times!

I still check out some of your blogs when I can!

Big congrats to Detta / Uma Thurman, whichever handle she's going by these days!

I installed and am currently posting from slack (YAY)! It has certainly been an interesting experience!

Just as a note, my previous *nix experience has been quite limited - I first used it at university, where they didn't really teach us anything, but we used it for certain apps. I installed Mandrake about 3 years ago, but had to kill it for disk space, then installed Redhat Fedora Core this year to do some stuff for my dissertation. Whenever I'd used it, it had been on a pre-configured system, or completely set up by an installer.

After install I rebooted, and got as far as grub, which I really didn't expect having just configured lilo

I'd never used grub before, so was rather concerned - I had no idea what I was doing! So, I hunted around the net, and found a few useful sites. Just about everything I tried complained about needing a kernel to be loaded (which I managed, but it didn't get me anywhere!). So I did some more hunting and managed to boot XP using:
Code: [Select]
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
boot

Whilst trying some stuff out, I managed to get to lilo using:
Code: [Select]
chainloader +1
boot

Which gave me my nicely setup lilo menu.

So I logged in, and tried to run X ... my screen went black, the hard drive rattled then stopped ... ... ... and nothing. So I hunted on the net again and the slackware site told me to use xf86setup. I could not for the life of me find it! Then I noticed the site was all in reference to slack 7, and realized things were probably different. So I hunted around and found a file called xorgconf (I think) which happily loaded up a nice X-screen, and let me configure things. So I set everything up, exited the program (making sure it saved everything) and then X would still not start!

I then found another config tool, which actually managed to set things up correctly! And I'm now happily sat in a KDE session. If nothing else, this has been an interesting experience, and I've learnt quite a bit along the way!

Edit: Did someone change my title? It seems rather apt ;)

A friend of mine linked me to an article recently about encryption. It had a section on factorising numbers (most modern encryption uses keys that are the product of two very large primes). So, one of the main tasks faced by decrypters is factorising numbers. We decided to see what we could come up with, and had a small matlab programming contest - a race to see who could come up with a program first, then we timed our code, optimized, raced again. We ended up combining our algorithms to produce this three line beauty:

Code: [Select]
possibleFactors = 1:(sqrt(number));
foundFactors = find(mod(number, possibleFactors)==0);
factorSet = [foundFactors; number./foundFactors]';

I just factorized 956564844779 (12 digits), in 0.4530 seconds!

I think this counts as a hack, because the second line relies on the fact that the array 'possibleFactors' contains the numbers 1 to the square root of the target number, it then 'finds' the location of all the numbers on the array that have a modulus of zero - and rather than working with the array values, just works using their locations within the array (since they are actually the same thing) ... this may not make much sense but it yielded huge speed reductions (in the order of 50-60%).

Psst, you don't have to sign your name to every post. We know who you are now.

I was thinking of saying "You don't need to sign your name, that's what a sig's for" ... but then realized she couldn't afford one.

Is it just me, or does the title say that he died at the age of 78, and in the first paragraph it says he died at the age of 84.

You're right! the register is going with 84.

Grey jeans, white t-shirt, blue jumper, white boxer-shorts, black socks, black shoes and glasses.

Does anyone have any idea why initially I started every word with a capital, and replaced every 'e' with a 'w'? That took a lot of editing!
