But the AMD64's are really fast gaming CPU's even without a 64bit OS.

If you had an AMD 32-bit processor and an AMD 64 bit-processor of equivalent Mhz running on a 32-bit O/S, wouldn't the performance be identical?

No, because there are other differences in the chip architecture, cache levels, memory controllers, FPU, MMU, etc etc.

I.e.

According to those benchmaks, the A64 3200 scores 6548 while the XP 3200 scores 6378. So that's less than a 3% increase in performance. It's negligible. You'll never see the difference. Also, they compare dual memory sticks vs single memory sticks. Dunno if that makes a difference.

True, but that was one graph out of a total review. There are differences that are measurable. And judging by buddies posts even a single FPS faster would have been justification to spend a few more hundred bucks.

Yes and no from what I understand. The memory controller is on the CPU for AMD64 so it runs at the speed of the front side bus which is about equal to the dual channel RAM. And potentially quite a bit faster.

See upteen zillion hardware review sites for better info. :-)

Good point. I just looked at the one you posted here. But when I apply the same logic to the others, there is a more significant difference in some cases.
