Hey I have gotten tired of using geocities and am looking for a webspace hosting site that is free and keeps ads to a minimum. Does anyone know anything like this. Oh yeah, it has to have more than 10mb of webspace per account.

And no I cannot afford my own domain but my website server will be ready by next year, I hope XP.

Ha. Just HA.

Only if you know a friend who's got their own server and is willing to give you space. Otherwise, you're going to have to cough up a few bucks a month.

I actually found a really good webhost.

You get 100mb and no ads what-so-ever and it is free.

It is http://www.0nyx.com

Good for a basic blog

I'd have a blog, but my life is so incredibly boring that I doubt anybody would give a damn.

Man!  Warn me before you do that next time, huh?  So I have a chance to put down my can of soda before reading things like that.

It seems Geocities decided I've reached my bandwith limit, so is there a cheap website hosting service that would get Teh Geekery seal of approval?

Alright it's reached the point where I have seen too much stupid crap not to say something about it.

I'm wondering should I make a blog to argue (and I mean argue as in Point>CounterPoint) things I hear or should I go the traditional website approach?

I've already written several things so far and I'll be posting them here as a sounding board assuming anyone wants to of course. Don't worry, the topic title will be obvious enough that you'll know what it is.

And thank you for the hosting service Cat.

Well, the blog services available (LiveJournal, blogspot, etc.) are free for basic services, and you don't have to get hosting. There are paid options available if you want more features.

If you're going to be using the webspace for image hosting or whatever anyway, it's really up to you. If ultimate control/customization is what you're after, then code a site. If you just want somewhere to rant, join the hordes at the blogging sites.

I don't know if I want to just rant though.

I simply want to make logical arguments, using facts to back up things that I say. I want this to be an actual debate, not a verbal fight.

I want to take something that I see/hear, often from talk radio, and try to have a debate about it. If any of you guys want to join me on that, please let me know (Your help will be very appreciated!)

I would try to do something like that here, but more often than not it would just degenerate into a giant joke, since we use a lot of humor here usually, but I'm trying to at least appear serious. (If you don't believe that would happen, just look at most of the threads. They usually unravel very quickly for one reason or another. Bad thing in this case) Perhaps I'll use satire to try and get my point across.

When I tried something like this on my livejournal, nobody would comment. (and yes, I do have friends, just not the kind to actually want to discuss anything)

So that is what I am aiming for, maybe I am asking too much of people but I at least have to throw this idea out there and see what people think. Any comments?

We've had some awsome debate threads. For a while, those threads were ruling the geekery. But then we got tired of beating around teh "Bush". There is room here for those kinds of discussion. In fact, when Verspertine makes a post here, it's usually to do just what you propose. But dammit she needs to post more often! Sure, people like me will go post a humorous crackonce in a while, but just slap me in the face and continue with the discussion. When Chris created this place, this is exactly the kind of threads he was hoping to see. I think it would be nice to have some good debate threads around like we used to.

One fatal flaw in these boards (here, HN, etc) for debate is most of us are like-minded. Makes it tough to debate if everybody pretty much agrees.
Though I'm sure there are subjects that would be controversial here. It would be interesting.
