iPods
« on: September 22, 2006, 11:08:51 PM »

Ok, I'm sure we've had a topic about this before, but I just don't feel like digging for it.  Also, I'm just WAY too lazy to do my own research.  I'm thinking about getting an iPod.  I know there are multiple models, storage sizes and price points.  Recommendations?

I have a 30gb iPod Video... Don't use the video feature that much, and the 30gb is more then enougth for ALL the music I could pirate.

Just make sure you get a case, the plastic on the iPod scratches like sugar glass.  :x

I have a 512 MB iPod Shuffle. That's 120 songs, roughly. More then I could ever use in a day. If you don't plan on storing your life story on it, I'd recommend something small. It's also quite cheap, I grabbed mine for around a hundred bucks. Now they're probably even cheaper.

I have an older 40GB model.  Love it.  I listen to it for 12 or so hours a day at work.  It's the ripping of all my CDs which is taking forever.  I'm still only 1/3rd or so through my collection.  And then there's the LPs and cassettes that I still will need to rip.  Maybe when Ian arrives and I'm not at work all the time I'll be able to squeeze in some ripping.

I have the same as Dark Shade, I really like it, it suffices.

I have no need for 30GB of storage, maybe you do, if not the shuffles are great little players  :-D

That will be a service I provide when my studio comes online...  *ahem*

Thanks to all who replied.  Now, here's another question.  There are posts about a 512MB and 30GB.  Is there anything in between?

Plenty. I believe there's a 1 GB iPod Shuffle, and possibly a 10 or 20 GB iPod Nano. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I don't go shopping much.

Heh. Plus, you'd have to ship all your cassettes, vinyl, and CDs to me...
That'll actually be more for 'local' clients.
"I've had this tape for years, and I want to put it on CD/comp/Ipod"  <==I get that a lot.
I can make tapes and vinyl nearly indistinguishable from CDs. :-D

I like the gritty analog sound quality of LPs.  Why would you want to lamefy the digital recording of it?

I said "nearly" :-P .  Like you, I LOVE the way an album sounds (except for the lack of lower freqs). But most non-connoisseurs ask for the pops and scratches to be removed. I can, however, leave it as is....  or enhance the album quality...  or not.
Sound is just sound; once you understand it, you can do almost whatever you (or your client) want with it.

Observe:   No actual vinyl was used in this recording.....

A friend of mine had a 10 gig mp3 player (Not an iPod) back in day just when they started getting up there in terms of storage on mp3 players. He told me that 10 gigs was more than he would ever need in an mp3 player.

Though that was back in the day (several years ago) and prices of technology like that were sky high then. By today's standards, I am sure the price has gone down a lot. I think Right around 10 gigs is where you want to be in terms of storage on a portable media device.

Just my .02.

My wife has had her iPod for only a couple months and it's already showing egregious wear on the screen... and she hardly takes it anywhere.

I advise doing what I did with my portable digital audio device:  buy a pack of PDA screen protectors and cut them down to fit on your iPod screen.

It works really well.

Yeah there are a bunch of home made cases you can make. But the best case I ever saw was a commercial one that was basically just encasing the iPod in 1/8" plastic

Hmm, perhaps a depleted uranium iPod case would be more effective... I think I saw one on eBay

I don't believe uranium ever depletes.

It has an awful lot of half-lives.

They don't make depleted uranium from uranium... it's made from something else i forgot lol.... all i know is it's not radioactive and is extremely dense. I believe they use it for military armor.
