You know what really grinds my gears?
« on: February 11, 2007, 11:22:03 PM »

When people of any age think it's alright to say whatever the frak pops into their head.  In the middle of class.  While someone else was talking. AND THEN you decide that because of your age it's ok and use that as the reasoning behind your verbal attack on the class and then have the gall to complain about ageism.  That really grinds my gears.

And no, it wasn't the prof it was a student in a grad program.

For me, it's being trolled and spammed; yet I'm the only name to be called out on it. Let the trollers troll; regulars, keep your mouths shut.

Graduate students usually think they're better than the rest of planet earth.

Some yeah... for this woman it wasn't even that she thought she was better than everyone just that she never considered anyone else's feelings or opinions to be true in any sense if they were not the same as hers...hopefully the last couple weeks have been illuminating for her.

Ouch...I'm too dim-witted to know if that's aimed at me, but I'm sensing MUCHO hurt there.

I meant no offense. Don't take most of what I say seriously, unless its in the political opinions topic, or I'm arguing with BizB.

Narrow-mindedness is really annoying to argue against.

I agree wholeheartedly, and would like to add that it is even more annoying, nay, downright frustrating when even despite evidence contrary to the narrow-minded viewpoint, the holder of such a viewpoint still wishes to judge those whose views run counter without merit, and not only show themselves in a negative light, but also misrepresent the views they hold and indirectly indict all holders of such views.  This is most common in debates concerning religion (or the absence of, as there are quite a few unreasonable atheists as well), and it really is a shame that narrow-minded "my-way-or-the-highway" types exist that steal the spotlight from reasonable debaters.

What is especially frustrating, however, is when these types of people hold power enough to impose their narrow beliefs upon those who hold principles against such beliefs.

My gears have been sufficiently ground, and a recent argument that I had brought this frustration to the fore.  I know many reasonable Christians, but this guy made me doubt their existence temporarily.

...as there are quite a few unreasonable atheists as well...

Sorry, this just caught my eye.

What is an unreasonable atheist? One who concedes the possibility that he is wrong, or that a theist is right about the underlying forces of nature?

Then he is not an atheist.

I meant there are those out there that would use or threaten violence in an attempt to persuade others.  An appeal to force, since it is a fallacy, is a departure from reason, and so the offender could be considered unreasonable.  I'm using "reason" to describe the process of appropriate argument and persuasion instead of describing the concept of logical thought.  "Non-reasoning" probably would have been a better word to describe my point.

Because, you know, I would argue that atheists are "reasonable" by definition, and those who accept the possibility of anything supernatural are not.

You should both see Xanadu.

It's enough to scare you both straight.  I'm completely serious about that.
