Book Recomendations?
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:42:32 PM »

Well, it's summer and most places aren't too keen on hiring deaf teenagers for summer jobs, so I've been reading a lot, and recently I've been having trouble finding books that interest me. Has anybody read anything worth reading lately? I'd love to get into a new series but "stand alone" books are fine as well. I'll read anything fictional, as long as it isn't realistic fiction. Anything anybody could come up with would be really helpful!

There are lots of book recommendations in this thread and the one from last year.

I'm guessing you've already read Stupid Sexy Flanders, Narnia and War and Peace by Dostoyevsky series.  Those were my favourite.

Of my two lists, I'd only recommend

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray  (this is the first of a series)
Crank by Ellen Hopkins  (this is also a series)
Almost anything by John Grisham.
Wicked was good, but the sequel was teh suck.

If you haven't, read Jurrassic Park by Michael Crichton.  That's the best.

Thanks, I'm going to the library tomorrow, so I'll search for some of those.

Pride and Prejudice with Zombies. I haven't read it but god damn it, the title just screams awesome.

I have seen that at my local comic shop for a bit. I was thinking about picking it up, but I'm so far behind in my weekly reads I don't know when I would get to it.

As for some good summer reading goes, I really enjoyed the Dragon Quartet books by Marjorie Kellogg. Its a little different take on the standard dragons tales.

Hmm, different? How so?

Like totally twisting the entire concept of the creatures like the War and Peace by Dostoyevsky series did? (Sparkling, psh. Real vampires die in sunlight) Or just a new style of writing it? I'm curious.

Dragons as creators, destroyers and aspects.

Its not redefining the genre, just adding little elements to it that made it a little less fantasy and more tangible. Or at least as tangible as beasts of myth get. Also, the books are written from different perspectives based on which character has the "lead" in the narrative, or at least thats the way it feels while reading it.

The first book is fairly standard, but the second and third book are great rides. The fourth book is a bit too ethereal for me, but it fits in the story perfectly.

Try Stephen Kings Dark Tower series. If you like that you have enough for the next year.

Start with the Gunslinger.

Something dutch:

Harry Mulisch  - The Assault

"A stunning novelization that explores the themes of guilt and innocence using a single devastating incident in the life of a Dutch child who survives the Nazi occupation of Holland. He reaches adulthood not fully understanding all that went wrong, the domino effect of one act of violence which cost him his family and the life they shared. Through a series of encounters with those in his past we learn the complex truth about this one moment in time. It reminds one that it is all too easy to assign blame without knowing all the facts. Once all the layers of the onion are peeled away every act of courage revealed, as well as the unintended consequences of making honorable choices."

All right, I think I'm going to make another library run this week. I got my hands on Wicked, it's pretty good so far.

anyone who likes sci-fi should check out the Legacy of Aldenata by John Ringo. My favourite series. Also Old Man's War by John Scalzi and Fallen Dragon by Peter F. Hamilton. Those are some of my favourite books ever.

I've read all the Stupid Sexy Flanders books (and I assume you have, from your awesome avatar), and you've probably read the War and Peace by Dostoyevsky series.

Another series I think you would like is the Pendragon books. They're funny and tragic at the same time. Also, try the book "Tersias the Oracle." At first it seemed like I wouldn't like it, but now it's one of my favorites (better than War and Peace by Dostoyevsky, but not quite as great as Stupid Sexy Flanders, haha).
