Hello, I'm Nick from Coventry
« on: July 30, 2010, 07:56:36 AM »

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I want to introduce myself. I'm nick and I live in the UK in a town called Coventry. I am interested in all kinds of hardware and softwear projects along with anything that is cool and interesting, for example plasma speakers :D

I been experimenting with ray tracing recently and I have seen a lot of people linking ps3's together to try and achieve real time ray taceing, they have had varying levels of success but I have yet to see a 60 frame per second game running on ray tracing.

For those of you who know a little about the subject will know that the calculations involved are not trivial and to render a scene using ray tracing with all the bells and whistles can take hours for a single frame.

I was thinking last night, why not use a single PIC micro controler for each ray processing the whole scene in parallele. I agree it will take a lot of pics for example in a 300X200 image you would need 60000 single PICS and shared memory may be a problem (although you could use some clever bus techniques).

I would be interested to know what everyone thinks, am I on to somthing or am I talking crap lol

Yeah, we're one of the only groups it is offered to.

Oh, and hello new person. And I have no idea what you're talking about in your intro post. The only thing I understand is PS3.

Are you a coder then probie, I always have prefered coding to the systems/requirements analyst stuff. In my experience it dont seem like you doing anything, I guess I'm a bit too much hands on for the job. It a shame you didnt get the job you would have liked it here, the people here are very "direct" about the way they feel so nothing is hidden it very easy to make friends and get on here. Plus an added bonus is you can get anything you need within a few mins so the weekends are great.

nah, not til august is our next holiday.

no ray tracing, we can get good enough lighting using basic ambient and specular lighiting and some shaders, which are much faster.

Not that I know of, I guess I should find out so I dont turn up for work lol. Well if you working there you gettin some money so you ok :) I spent 6 months without a job and it was hell. In one week my girlfriend of four years broke up with me, I rented a house off her mother so she asked me to leave and then got a call saying I was being made redundent. So I lst my girl friend, my house and my job in one week, oh yea in that week I wrecked my car and broke my hand aswell lol. I lived on a friends living room floor on a matress for 6 months until I got myself sorted out. That kind of experience makes you appriciate what you got, if your living then it all good :D

Ray tracing is not the most efficent way of rendering but can produce stunning results. So I guess you work with polygon rendering then, I did a bit of that using directx and opengl but never really got the hang of it. Have you heard of o3d

Poor dead Ashley.

Dot.

The very dead and good riddance to him Charlie.

Ok, this is where you post "lol I don't watch telly what is EastEnders?"

No, this is not my forum. You just happened to catch me in a loud and obnoxious mood. Normally I'm overshadowed by the real stars of the forum, as you will soon see.

And the Star Trek guy won't last. He has a pathetically short attention span.

It's true, he does.

Hi, Nick! I'm Xolik. Ivan is only in a 'loud and obnoxious' mood on days that end with a 'y'.

Hey Nick, i am new to this forum too.

I have been reading about Ray Tracing but i don't know that much about him at all.  From what i read, if he worked, he would be amazing!  Have you tried using a single PC ?  I'd be interested to know how you get on with that!   :slap
