School administrations also decided that for future concerts, religious songs can be included, as long as other faiths are represented as well.

So...  exactly how would you represent Jews in a *ahem* Christmas play? Or Muslims? Or Hindu? Or Buddhists?   This is a CHRISTMAS (read: Christian) holiday. Why the hell should you represent everyone else? I would DEMAND a Christmas tree for Ramadan; and to be let off from work with pay for Chanukkah - all of it.

Many parents shouted out with glee when they heard the song was back in the program.

You must be shit'n me. Parents...shouting with glee...for a Rudolph song...no wonder kids these days kill their parents...

And ginger bread men for Diwali, and sparkles for Walpurgisnacht, and a leg of yak for Rosh Hashanha, with seven-armed candle sticks for Shawwal, and gallons of wine for Laylat ul Bara'ah - more more more holidays with things that are things, because we said they were...and then they were from...a book...

I think everyone is missing the point that Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer is about as secular as you can get.
Also, Jesus was a Jew, so for a Jew to get offended at the most tangential reference to the most famous and revered Jew in history is pretty ridiculous.

To paraphrase, it's people like this who cause atheism to be associated with intelligence.

Also, Jesus was a Jew

...Who went completely against a lot of rabbinical teachings, brazenly and repeatedly committed what to them appeared as blasphemy, and apparently misled a large portion of the Jewish race through his message and example.

Not that I agree with any of that, but... yeah, I can see how they could find him offensive, tangents aside.

I split this topic for the purpose of allowing this thread to somewhat stay on topic, rather than getting into a debate about whether or not Jesus was really black. I don't mind serious discussions like that going on here, in fact, I think it's good because it requires at least one person in the argument to think critically about the subject.

However, there is a specific sub-forum for topics like that, and if anyone would like to continue the debate / discussion that started in this thread, please click here.

That's one view... some Jews call him a rabbi.  The gamut pretty much runs from indifference to reverence as a prophet.
Kind of beside the point, unless you really think the person mentioned in the article gave it this much thought.

Who said prejudice required much thought? :)
I know there are lots of people who don't think about it, and just fuss because things aren't squarely focused on their religion/interests/whatever. But there are some people who legitimately feel strongly about it.

Why are you asking "what?" in spanish?  And besides, I have no idea why I typed that.  I saw code and my hands started typing instantaneously.

What's great is that I know exactly where that school is and this isn't too out of character.

I work at a well-known

Catholic

university

(which shall remain nameless for anonymity purposes.)

One of the things I love about this place is how unabashed they are in their celebration of Christmas.  It's like, "none of this 'Happy Holidays or not' crap, we're a religious school, so we're gonna be in your face, dammit.  So we have Christmas trees and Christmas decorations and get Christmas cards and a Christmas vacation... and the Christmas parties... ooooh, the Christmas parties.  I count 5 this year.  Good ones, too.  Like, open-bar good.  It doesn't matter if you're Christian or Jewish or atheist, you can still come to the party and have fun.

I'm generally fairly libertarian, but over-the-top efforts to make a point out of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer seem more about having a burr so far your ass you can't possibly stomach the idea of anyone enjoying anything remotely tied to what may once have been a religious holiday than they are about legitimate concerns about state establishment of religion.

Okay, I originally had a point, but then I started writing and remembered the surf and turf we had for our annual Christmas dinner and my mind went all "mmmmm.... surf.  And turf."  and I forgot what I was gonna say.  Except I support free fancy dinners.
