Nuclear Submarines
« on: November 12, 2006, 10:43:26 PM »

Sorry for bringing this up AGAIN but (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolysis) Wikipedia claims that subs DO use electroysis to produce oxygen for use underwater, despite what Demo says. Do they maybe carry other 'consumable' gases to mix with the oxygen with them? Was he thinking of older subs? Is Wikipedia wrong, and if so where did this weird myth come from? Did I create it and forget that I spread it all over the interweb? What were the X-files writers THINKING with the last couple of seasons?

Any help, professional or otherwise, would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with citing Wiki is that you could've stuck that bit in yourself 10 minutes before citing it.

Yes, it is technically possible to use electrolysis to produce oxygen on submarines, and yes, modern submarines have equipment on board to do so.

However, there is rarely, if ever, need for it.  The volume of air that is brought down on submarines contains enough oxygen to be sufficient to keep the entire crew supplied for far, far, far longer than most subs can carry food to feed them.

And before you spout off about how even nuclear submarines have diesel generators on board to generate auxiliary power in case of reactor shutdowns and how diesels need large amounts of oxygen in order to run, keep in mind that not even state-of-the-art nuclear submarines operate their generators below snorkel depth, so the O2 for that purpose is coming from the outside atmosphere.

Oh okay, so it's some sort of emergency system then?

I can't honestly say... the volume of oxygen you'd get out of one would make for a pretty piss-poor backup.  It would take considerable time to make any significant amount of O2 using the rigs I've seen.

It may have other purposes.  I really don't know though.  Like I said in the other thread, it really wasn't my area of expertise; I only studied those kinds of conventional auxiliaries to pass my quals and mostly stuck to the stuff that was my job.
