Employer Sucks
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:19:49 PM »

I just learned today that my company, a retail store, has increased its base hiring rate.  They did not increase current employees pay however.  This means someone hired today with no experience  will be making more than I am and I've been with the company for two years.  The also make a little bit more than my friend who has been with the company for four years.  That shows how much they think about us I guess.  Is this common practice or just my bad luck?  I think I might start looking for a new job, I mean according to the rules I could quit and if they rehired me I would be making more.  They do have a rule you can not be rehired for one year, and that would mean I would miss a raise, but I would still be making more.  Sorry if I was redundant, but it just crazy.

To some degree, yes this does happen at other places from what I understand. This is especially true when the minimal wage is raised, causing once noticeable pay gaps between veteran workers and new hires to almost disappear.

Though, a new hire making more money than a person with two years of experience, or almost as much as someone who has four years of experience, to me, is pushing it a little too far.

You may want to bring your concerns up with your store manager. You can argue that you are more valuable to the company and to the store because you have more experience, as well as any other noteworthy traits in regards to your working habits.

However, if you have received negative reviews in the past and management has still not seen any improvement, then getting any additional money from them may prove to be difficult.

When I was in highschool, I worked at a fast food place for 2 years. The manager decided to give everyone a raise (10 cents/hour). Everyone, inlcuding the dicks who didn't do shit, and the people that where hired the previous month. I really felt shortchanged there and I did the only think I could think of: Told them to fuck right off. I found the whole thing unfair and even insulting so I left. Perhaps that's not an option for you, but remember that a solid education goes a long way. If you skip on it, you may be faced with similar situations all your life, and who needs that crap?

That is total bullshit BDC, it flys in the face of logic...

As it's been noted, you are most likely of more value to the company than the recruits.  Hell, since you're retail, it's probably gonna be you long-termers training these new guys, how does it make sense for the student to make more than the teacher?

Look into it first, but you're probably within your rights to complain further up the chain.

It is walmart, and new hires do get more becuase of a $2 increase in the minimum wage.  They decided not to pass on the increase to people already employed.

That really sucks.  You should get the existing employees to unionize.

I'm tired of WalMart bashing. Let the large retailer without sin file the first lawsuit against them.

You're right ivan, we should rip off ALL of the large chains, not just Wal-Mart. They're ALL guilty.

Hiring new people at higher rates is more common than you think.  Employers are short-sighted and install policies such as maximum 3% raises.  Meanwhile the cost of hiring a n00b goes up, and hence job-jumpers are rewarded and loyal employees are screwed.  It happened with my work.  They hired a n00b at $10K higher than me, and I had to train the fucker.  The only caveat is when we had the layoffs last month, I remained and the other two were laid off, so at least I have that going for me.

This may be a dumb question, but if they are making more than you are, and they're making minimal wage, aren't you making less than the minimal wage?

I have a son in law who works at wal-mart, I don't believe they start at minimum wage.
2 or 3 dollars over min. sounds about right to my recollection.

on edit: He makes 8.75 ph now and he has been there for 1.5 yrs ... (raises small and slow to come about)

pb is right.  This is far more common than you might think, especially in the corporate world.  I could go back to my old job today, and make 15K a year more than I am right now (that amounts to 20 to 25K more than when I left).  Corporate employers don't usually go for the big raises, but they have to raise the hiring range to keep new talent coming in.  As such, long term employees are often the most out of synch with market wages.

I make more than minimum wage, witch+ will be $7.00 in june, they decided to increase thier rate for new hres before the increase goes into effect.  I make $7.40 an hour.  The policy for my store is that people in my position are hired at minimum wage + $1.90 an hour or $8.90 an hour now, remember they increaed pay ahead of the minimum wage increase.  They however did not change pay for current employees.  So I make $1.50 less an hour than new hires at my position.  The only thing I do have over them is two weeks paid vaction for being there two years.  Also at least at my store not a single new hire is full time, they are all 32 hour part time or temps.  It will take them two years to start earning vacation or other benifits. We get $0.40 raises every year so as far as pay rate the will be making a little more than 4 year emoloyees (4 X $0.40 = $1.60).  There have laso been major cutbacks in staffing levels, we use to have 7 full time peole now we have three full time and a part time.  Other areas have simular cuts.

Sounds like a pretty good idea, if you ask me. I know, as messed up as it seems, here's the idea that I think is behind it:

You have your new hires make more than the veterans to try and make the veterans work harder because they think if they do, they'll eventually see more money. This of course, will probably not happen.

Next, you pay your new hires pretty well compared to the businesses around you, bringing you in lots of good potential workers who think they are getting paid pretty well. Next thing they know, it's time for a raise, and the minimal wage is going up too at the same time. So they move them up to the minimal wage as their raise, and essentially skip their real raises. Only a few of the best get anything above minimal wage.

By the time the veterans get fed up and realize what's going on, it will probably be too late to do anything because by that time, they already have an entire new crew that's making minimal wage who know how to do everything in the store.

The best part is, now that they have a lot of extra workers to help run the place, everyone gets less hours, which lessens the risk of the store having to pay dreaded overtime hours.

...I'm a manager of a restaurant, for those of you who don't know. That's why.
