I'm allergic to my slinky
« on: March 31, 2003, 04:32:17 PM »

Yup, that's right...and it took me 8 months to figure it out.

Ever since the summer, my face has been breaking out kinda bad.  I've never had bad skin before, and was starting to get really upset.  I changed my face soap, my make-up, even my shampoo.  I tried everything.  I thought it might be my allergy shots, because I started them in the summer time.  But I only get them once a month now...but the break-outs continued.

So I'm sitting at my computer playing with the slinky.  I put it down and put my hand on my face as to pondor a question and that's when it came to me!  My sister bought me that slinky as a gift when the contract on my house was accepted...on the 4th of July.  I put the slinky in the drawer and haven't touched it since.  My skin cleared up and I'm beautiful again (well...I was beautiful before, but I had to use alot of makeup).

Stupid slinky.

Goofy how allergies work.

I'm allergic to one thing and one thing only, and it happened to be the kind of animal I used to keep for a pet.

Yup.  I'm allergic to rats.

Rosie was a rat that I had for a few years, before she passed away in February of 2000.  She was a female Norwegian Brown rat (Ratus norwegicus) and was a good friend.

That's a cool rat.  I'm fond of snakes myself.  I have a 3' columbian red tail boa. Let me know if you want to see a picture, I'll see what I can find.

Hmmm.  Whenever Jason would scratch me, I would get really itchy in that spot.  I always thought that was weird.

I was in the pet store at snake feeding time once when I was a kid.  That scarred me for life.

It took a few years for it to develop for me... I used to get that too, when I handled Rosie for any amount of time longer than a few minutes, but that was about it.

However, after Rosie died, I got two male rats.  Not only did I introduce twice the rat allergens into my home, but the protein that I happen to be allergic to is incredibly more present in male rats' saliva (which, like cats, gets spread all over their fur when they groom, wreaking pure havoc on those who are allergic) than in females, so it was like drinking regular old domestic beers at a slow pace and suddenly switching to shots of Everclear.

Needless to say, only a week or so after getting Jake and Elwood I started waking up at like 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning with asthma attacks.

Then I started getting asthma attacks pretty much any time I was in the house, period.  They started getting pretty severe after a while, so I went to an allergist to be sure, and they tested me out on like everything.  Rats were the only thing I came back positive on, and of course it was in a "severe" category.  At that time they had me do blow-tests too so that they could measure my lung capacity, and it was down to less than 50% and getting worse.

I ended up having to find another home for the boys and I had to go through about 6 months of hellish asthma medication (the steroids in which cause me to put on weight like a fricken polar bear and to add insult to injury they make me into a moody, raving asshole, instead of my usual, cheery self) to get back to normal.  Ordinarily I only get asthma attacks from things like paint fumes or cleaning agents, but I got to add rat-dander to my list.  :(

Oh well.  On the up side, while I was on the medication, I figured it was probably a good time to quit smoking, since cigarette smoke was beginning to aggravate my condition as well, so I managed to kick that habit too.  It's been almost three years now since I quit, and I'm not sorry one bit.

Pet Rocks are the most loyal, obebient, friendly, useful, cheap pets on the market.  They can even be used to make annoying neighbors stop talking to you, or if you're really good, they'll stop talking all together!

Detta, as an 18 year old male, I find feeding time to be quite entertaining.  My snakes only eat live, although I've tried to switch them to frozen, but that didn't work.

Wait, the frozen ones or the live ones?

I tried letting the frozen ones go into hot water for about 20-30 seconds, then for a minute, and the snake wouldn't go near it.  It's grown so accustom to being fed in his cage that only I can pick it up now, it's great. Have a 3' red tail boa, and a 1' 6" "baby" python.

Does it really matter? It will face the same fate regardless.

Well, the frozen one would probably defrost, while the live one would probably explode.

The live one sounds like so much more fun...  Try the live one first.

I get really bitchy.. and my face gets really hot and turns three different colors of red. I can feel my stomach knot up, and I get really angry when ever I have a run in with the man I live in the same house with. Would this in all fairness be something to consider some kind of an allergic reaction to him? Just curious.
