Puzzle of the Week 14
« on: April 21, 2011, 03:32:02 PM »

I think this week and next may overlap due to my tardiness.

PM me the answer.  Do not post it here.

Puzzle #14 (4/21/11)

Send the answer by Wednesday.  This is a Super Duper Double Puzzle Wacky Week!  The scoring will be different.  Usually, anyone who answers on Monday gets 25 points, Tuesday 20 points, Wednesday 15 points and so on down.  This week, each day is still assigned a certain number of points, but the order is jumbled.  You may get 25 points on Wednesday, but only 10 points on Monday.  So answer the first puzzle and then guess which day to answer it on so that will get you the most points.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!  You can solve puzzle B and that will tell you which days are worth what points.  Puzzle B involves the digits 1-9.  Once solved, look at the order of digits 1-5, they will correspond to the days of the week.  Thursday (today) = 1, Fri/Sat/Sun = 2, Mon = 3, Tues = 4, Wed = 5.  So for example, if the puzzle solution puts a 5 first (reading left to right, top to bottom), and then a 1, that would mean that Wed is worth the most points, followed by today being worth the second most points.

Sorry if that's confusing.  You only have to answer Puzzle A to get points and it's an easy one.

Puzzle A

Each set of letters below began as a two-word phrase in which both words started with the same letter (like evil eye or jumbo jet).  I've removed the initial letters of the words and then removed the space between them.  What were the original phrases?

1. astood
2.  loseall
3.  minocid
4.  emonaw
5.  uffiece
6.  open

Puzzle B is attached.

Yay puzzles!

Also, you used my suggestion. This pleases me.

Yay I figured them out!

Hint: The second puzzle is easier if you apply Navier-Stokes equations!

And here I was going to brag about my finely-honed methodology called "process of elimination".

Sheesh.

Hooooooly crap.  I haven't dealt with Navier-Stokes since... the early 90s, I think.

Not sure if it's Navier Stokes or not, but using simple mathematics concepts there are two (only two) specific rows/columns which are very easy to solve and which pretty much make the rest of the spaces very simple to resolve.

The constraint "all calculations involve only positive whole numbers" is what made it possible for me. Also the assumption that each number can appear only once in the solution. With that, everything solves itself like tumbling dominoes.
