2.  Printers.  Printers suck.  They're the bane of IT anyway.  It's hard enough to troubleshoot printer issues remotely.  Now try troubleshooting them remotely on local workstations AND redirected printers on a terminal server.  *shudder*

I agree with that. I think I changed a GPO somewhere to disable printer mapping to client connections, because whenever I try to print something from a remote location, the only option that comes up is the printer that physically attached to the server, not the local printer that is right next to me.

A While back when I was really learning about the idea of terminal services and thin clients, I bought a ThinCast5000 from eBay for a few bucks. The only complaints that I have about the unit is that it doesn't support many colors (I don't remember off the top of my head), only a certain resolution (which is understandable for bandwidth managing, but it's still not very large), and no local USB ports.

Demo,

I have experimented with Citrix for a little while in my time, and I noticed that the refresh rate seems to be better than it is with TS for Windows. Have your clients ever complained about the refresh rate being too slow or "jumpy" to use day in and day out? And if they have, is there any way to improve/increase the refresh rate for TS for Windows? I have done some searching in my time, but I have not found anything. Maybe this is because there is nothing that can be done.

Personally, I really like the idea behind thin computing. If someone could develop thin clients that run under 100 dollars, take up as little space as possible, and don't require more than 100 watts (plus the monitor of course), thin computing would be common place in today's world.

Obviously, there are some arenas where thin computing isn't an option: CAD Labs in college, companies who design graphics and media, etc could not use thin clients.

There are a couple of VNC solutions out there that work well if you just want to manage a computer remotely, and not have the ability for multiple sessions. Such solutions are winVNC and ultraVNC

I put one on order, I used the code 4432 like you said, and got a discount. When will I get it???

I can't believe someone would use these forums for ANY type of research.

This might be slightly related to the "internet and weed" topic. Many years ago when Hacker Network was still young and not full of too many script kiddies, Crazy Greek FTPed into the HN server while drunk and accidently deleted all of the files used to display the forum's database.

Needless to say, he quickly learned not to mix the two elements again.

Every geek knows that smoking near computers is a bad idea. After a while you have a build up of disgusting shit in the case, and it smells like shit.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea. But if someone wants to destroy their own bodies, why the hell not? They can go rent Battlefield Earth, or even The New Guy, so why not let them smoke? I believe this holds true so as long as I don't have to breathe in their smoke while in public places.

Welcome.

A start would be to get your A+. For some reason places like to see that you can turn on a computer, and know how to set jumpers on a hard drive. Other than that, you're on the right track with certifications, but the main thing in IT is experience. Without it, you can't get very far. Just keep going at it and soon you'll be there.

I am NEVER drinking a powdered mix protien shake again. Ugh, I had a bad batch of it and have been stomach sick for the past two days. Not a pretty sight.  :(

What kind did you take? I pretty much take MetRX, whey protein and creatine all at the same time after working out and never had roblem. Then later on before I go to sleep I'll take MetRX Protein Plus.

I ran out of MetRx and went with (oh God) GNC House Brand. Yeah...I know. But it was soooo cheap!   You know, the frustrating thing is that I've been doing my damnest to get stronger, but I seem to be stuck at the same max weight for each type of exercise I try. I've made sure I don't do the same tired routine every trip and space my days out proper so I can recover, and I just seem to be gaining. I think I'm pretty much supposed to stay skinny but toned.  :(

I have found that by taking a protein shake right after I work out helped me to gain about 15 pounds in just a few weeks. It sounds crazy that someone can see those kinds of gains, but give it a shot. By taking it into the gym and drinking it right after you work out, you are refuiling your muscles right away.

The idea I had when I created this sub-forum several years ago was that it could be a place for people to get ideas for their articles. For example, if you were writing about how we're all doomed and going to hell because of global warming, you could create a new thread in this forum, post what you have so far, and ask for suggestions or input on what others thing before you post it.

By the way, you all should have PMs from me containing your Mambo (CMS) login information, as well as your @gotthegeek.com email login information. If you have not received it for some reason, please send me a PM.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Who has a PDA?
« on: February 02, 2006, 07:42:09 PM »
I own a Palm Zire, and my dad has a Dell Axim. I seldomly use mine (Though I'd like to use it more often) and he uses it all the time. The only thing that I find to be a little "weird" with his Axim is configuring it to connect to my wireless network. The settings aren't really clear, so reading the manual is a good thing.

Personally, I like the idea of having a PDA for organizing myself and whatnot, but the only downside to having one is that it's another thing to carry around and worry about. I find it to be kinda annoying to carry one around alongside my cell phone. I would probably use it a lot more, had I not lost the CD to install the Palm software.

As usual, there were several things Judge pointed out that we need to work on before going through with the new accounts. I give it one additional day before those of you without an active account for the new CMS (Mambo) will be able to publish/submit articles.

The following accounts need to be created:
Phife
pbsaurus
Ivan
Scribcake
Vespertine
Detta
Dark Shade

I currently only have reimero listed as a writer within the CMS. For those of you who once had access to the old CMS, the URL has since changed to the following because a new system was put into place last July (2005):
http://admin.gotthegeek.com

There's also a document that I have typed up on using the new CMS, and I have attached it to this post. I encourage all of you to read through it in order to get a feel for the system before you use it.

In the mean time, I will be creating user accounts in the new CMS for all of those who are in the "writers" group on the forums here, as well as @gotthegeek.com email addresses for those same accounts. Expect a PM including your login information from me by the day's end.

Political Opinions / Pornography
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:41:46 PM »
We did something like this in my English class this evening. The professor told us to get into small groups and just talk about the topics that we came up with. Believe it or not, we actually came up with a lot of good ideas and subtopics to write about and research. Most of the time we did this in other classes, NOTHING ever got done. And I mean NOTHING.

I find night classes are a lot better because a lot of your typical 18 - 21-year-old pot heads/weed addicts are well... weeded out since they are all out partying by that time.

I think "obscene" is based solely on one's opinion on the topic up for debate. For instance, someone might find pigs getting their heads cut off in a slow manner to be obscene, but some guy might actually find it to be very civilized., and might also call it a form of entertainment.

$700 will just about get you a dual system if you really shop around for stuff. I am running several dual AMD systems right now in my room and they were all put together for around 500 or 600 dollars. Though I did have a lot of spare parts lying around.

Man did not "invent" man. However, man did invent and manufacture everything that a computer uses to work. Therefore we have a good understanding of how computers work because we made them from the ground up.

Anarchy / My college text books are made of gold!
« on: January 24, 2006, 09:43:11 PM »
Some of my classes actually have books that were specifically made for the college itself. This way they have specific pages in there that the professor uses.

The odds of finding one of these books used online is slim, and the odds of getting a book used from the bookstore on campus are pretty slim as well, since they put out 10 at a time - effectively creating their own supply and demand system.

Here's a nice little rant...

"What the fuck" is what I say when I'm on campus buying my books for the semester. How does a book wind up costing me 160 dollars?

The best part is when you go to sell them back. You ask them, "How much will I get for this when I turn it in?" and they reply with "20 dollars." Two days later for find your book for sale for 80 dollars.
