Another meaningless Halloween

Halloween… What is the fuss all about? For kids, it’s probably the coolest event excluding Christmas. But what does Halloween mean nowadays? Christmas is a religious holiday that is supposed to teach you stuff about the joy of giving, etc. It doesn’t really work out, but at least it stands for something and that message is being reinforced. We don’t teach kids the values of Halloween. In fact, most parents don't even now why Halloween exists. Instead, we dress up babies and children in idiotic outfits just because they look cute. We drag them around the block, go brag about their cuteness to the world and collect candy. What the hell is a 3 month old going to do with candy? Well guess what, mom and dad will be eating it. And that’s Halloween! Yay!

Now what about older kids? They go out in gangs, run around the streets with a bag pack full of eggs and they vandalise properties. Or they set things on fire, steal candy from younger kids, and basically get to go out all night and behave like total idiots. I remember those days… I remember being in a group of about 15 people and setting up fireworks on someone’s front lawn, pointing them directly at their houses. I remember being chased trough people’s back yards, running like there was no tomorrow. I remember “accidentally” throwing eggs at a cop car. Yeah… That’s what being a rebel kid was all about. And Halloween was definitely my favourite night. But none once in my life has anyone taught me the reason for Halloween to exist. At a young age, it was all about getting candy. Getting so much candy that it lasted till Easter. Or eating the whole thing in one night, being sick for a week, and then stealing from my brother’s stash later…

So what did I learn about Halloween? I have a mask. I can do stupid things. I won’t be recognized. As long as I can outrun the angry mob, I’ll be fine. I can throw things at people, at cars, at houses. I can spray paint things and express myself. I can set things on fire. I can chase kids and scare them to death. I can do what ever the hell I want because I’m with my friends and we all have masks. Yup… That’s what Halloween was for a rebel teen.

Now I look back and think “Sure, I have unforgettable memories. But do I want to remember I was a total idiot?” I guess its part of growing up. But isn’t it time for parents to teach their kids the actual values of Halloween? Or for schools to do it? Will people ever snap out of the commercial aspect of Halloween? There is a great opportunity to teach kids some good values on October 31st. Why is everyone passing it up? Perhaps they have forgotten the purpose of Halloween. This was just a friendly reminder.

I love Halloween.  I wasn't allowed to get into it when I was a kid, but now I think it's fun.  I dress up and go to a party or whatnot.  I'm going to wear my costume to work this year.  And I love the pumpkin carving too!

It's fun, Judgie!  FUN DAMMIT!!

I know it is... I like it too. It's fun. But it's still meaningless. I think it could also be beneficial to teach some of the why's of Halloween to kids. Because there's more to it than dressing up and solliciting strangers for candy. And that's kind of ironic since normally, we try to teach the opposite. lol!

And why the hell couldn't you get into it as a kid? That's cruel!

Halloween's about the only holiday I don't have a problem with, actually.  Nobody gets all stupid about it, and it's fun to go to costume parties.  I'm not particularly fond of candy, but I have always thought the idea of trick or treat to be amusing.

I did Halloween as a kid, then around fourteen we stopped (yeah, religious mom like Dettas'), and after that I grew up and decided to get into it. I'm liking it so far. I mean, if I want to worship Satan, I can, right? Beelzebub is your friend...
