Hey there's an idea.

What if, for a little while, anyway, you made all of our status titles say that?

Particularly the status titles of newbies that ask us tech support questions.

Ooh, I like this idea.

But they all seem to be illiterate, so would it make a difference?

Oh yeah.  Dammit!  I keep forgetting about that part!

They've found our one weakness!  We communicate only via the written word, and they're immune to it BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FUCKING READ!

You might change there first post, the one that is the tech question, into a short paragraph or sentence basically saying

"Introduce yourself in the New User's Forum, This is Not  a tech support forum, if you don't like it leave."

Again, there's that illiteracy thing.

Face it... there is no text-based solution to this problem.

We'll just have to kill them.  Otherwise they'll never learn.

I think we can all agree that there have been some pretty stupid people joining the board, as shown: Here by our good friend David AKA He-Who-Will-Not-Stop, and Here, by "Sir KoRNexpressor the Special".

We've helped some of them, this person for example, and they of course buggered off once they got their help.

Is there any way to stop them from being stupid? Maybe limiting their first few posts to the New Geeks topic until they've had a few posts?

A clear and obvious warning while they are creating an account? I mean something like GIANT FLASHING LETTERS, or even a page BEFORE they get to the creation where all it says in giant letters is "THIS IS NOT A TECH SUPPORT FORUM. IF YOU ARE JOINING TO ASK A QUESTION, GET THE HELL OUT."

A terms and service thing wouldn't work, not many people read them anyway.

How about making them type the words, "Geek is not a four-letter word meaning Tech Support Technician."

Just some ideas, because the new people posting sure seem to be lacking in the clue department.

That's not really the point anymore. The point is that they think we should help them because we're "geeks" and that's "what we do," and when we instead tell them to bugger off, they get trollish and don't know when to sulk off.

That said, if someone learns that lesson, starts a completely new account and follows the rules...I'm willing to give them a shot. Tweek over at HN is a prime example of someone who's been banned at least once and is now a contributing member because he admitted he was wrong, and proved it.

Take the filter off your Gmail account. I don't need your MySpace messages from Jenna and MissBlueEyed.

I'm the one that is the most easy going here out of anyone else. I'm also the one that pretty much has the final say in who gets banned from the forums and server and other stuff like that.

Personally, I really don't have a problem with your initial questions. I, however, understand that other members of these forums may not have the same values/opinions though, and I cannot expect them to automatically go with whatever I want.

I've seen this influx in many forums, especially in this forum-
http://www.megatokyo.com
It's summer almost, people are bored. They crap around with shit they don't understand on 'that TV thing in the cornor ZOMG' and they end up needing tech support. They then seek help from the people which they probebly bully at school

Yes, I beat up on all the geeks at my school. I yell, "Hey Doofus -- format THIS" and punch them in the pocket protector. Then a blood-red wave of cringing remorse washes over me as I throw myself upon my erstwhile victim and hump madly until we both spend copiously.

Hell, it's the only sex they get.
