Currently reading The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks.
I read this one back when I was about 15 or 16 or so, and barely made it through it. The writing itself isn't bad, but as an amateur Tolkien scholar, The Sword of Shannara is so openly derivative of the Lord of the Rings that I found it almost unreadable.
However, I've been told by many people whose opinions I find credible that I need to give the series another chance, that it gets better after the first book.
I'm not sure I'll even make it through the first book this time around. I just got to the part where Frodo and Sam get their first look at the Ringwraith that's hunting them in the Shire, and they've decided to flee on Aragorn's advice and meet up with Gandalf at Rivendell to the east.
I'm not joking, it's that blatant.
Somebody please tell me the series is worth it.

That's one heck of a coincidence, as there was a discussion of The Sword of Shannara and other Terry Brooks works on MetaFilter yesterday. http://www.metafilter.com/140344/The-Thomas-Kinkade-of-high-fantasy

24. The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
I finally finished The Sword of Shannara. It took me a ridiculous amount of time because it was so painful. I don't know why I did that to myself.
So, since I read something that was derivative of the Lord of the Rings that was basically a shameless ripoff of it, I decided that I might as well read something openly derivative of it that's better. So I'm currently reading The Last Ringbearer (http://dcplive.dekalblibrary.org/2013/01/16/the-last-ringbearer/), by Kirill Yeskov.
I'm about halfway through it and so far it's amazing. If you're a Tolkien fan, I highly recommend it.
Shannara, not so much.

25. The Last Ringbearer (http://dcplive.dekalblibrary.org/2013/01/16/the-last-ringbearer/) by Kirill Yeskov
I was pretty blown away by The Last Ringbearer. Those of you who are Tolkien fans need to read this book. Beyond simple fan fiction, this is a reimagining of Arda from the point of view of Mordor, and it's not what you think. Well written, engaging, bold, and written with a voice that is simultaneously tongue-in-cheek and incredibly tragic, this novel feels like something that needed to be said, even if the Tolkien estate wants this author to burn at the stake. I consider this to be an important work, and I highly recommend it.
If nothing else, The Last Ringbearer needs to be read because there are those out there who don't want you to.
Currently I'm reading Logan's Run by William F. Nolan.

I last read William F. Nolan's "Logan" trilogy when I was about 15 and I remember liking them a lot. However, that was so long ago that I barely remember them, so it's almost like reading them for the first time. I blew through the first two pretty quickly.
So... Currently I'm reading Logan's Search by William F. Nolan.

29. 11-22-63 by Stephen King
11-22-63 was surprisingly good. I blazed through it quite rapidly. Didn't hurt that I stayed home from work sick today and spent most of the day either napping or reading this. I finished it late this afternoon. I am considering it one of the best time travel novels I've ever read.
So.... it put me in the mood to re-read The Door Into Summer by Robert A. Heinlein, which I haven't read in a very long time.

Finally remembered that I actually own a kindle and am currently reading Lewis Black's "I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas" and I don't know wth it is with books being in Kindle format but I'm much more likely to read the whole thing on a screen than on a page.
Which is an opinion that my younger self would have kicked the crap out of me for blasphemy. :-)
