Title: New Star Wars Movies
Post by: Demosthenes on January 12, 2017, 09:56:07 PM
Okay, we're geeks, most of us have opinions on science fiction, some of us like Star Wars (some of us don't, because, stupid), but I'd like to open a discussion on the new films.

The Force Awakens

Rogue One

What did you like?  What didn't you like?  Why?

I'm genuinely curious, because I have some strong opinion (surprise) about both films and I'd like some sounding boards.

Discuss.

I liked The Force Awakens better when it was called A New Hope.
I liked Rogue One when it was... oh, hell... they're all basically the same story told over and over. They may have gotten my last dollar unless the next one comes in 360° VR headset version.

Well THAT I can definitely agree with.

I enjoyed both. Not in a "BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!" sort of way so much as in an "it was a fun romp and I don't regret having seen it" sort of way. Well, I wouldn't call Rogue One a "fun romp", but you know what I mean.

My favourite part about The Force Awakens was when Kylo Ren read the Mishawaka-area Community Calendar on the Colbert show.

What, exactly, is the point of a storm trooper helmet if they can be killed/knocked out by a religious freak with a stick?

I'm right there with you that TFA was just a modern-day version of A New Hope. About 50 minutes in I was getting annoyed that I had just paid to see essentially the same thing that I had seen many years ago as a kid. I mean, were they just getting low on cash and needed a way to bring some more in?

Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen TFA yet! Don't read further!

The one thing that really bugs me with TFA is the fact that Rey learns how to essentially use The Force within what seems to be MAYBE 3 days time whereas everyone else before her took a much longer time and then proceeds to give Kylo Ren a run for his money, despite him having trained and practiced for years on end.

That's one of many things about TFA that bug me.

Keyword: "seems". I think there is an explanation for this that will come up in the next movie. Memory wipe or something cliché like that.

Funny... I just watched TFA last night and thought something similar. In the last fight scene between her and Kylo it was almost as if she was in The Matrix and asked Tank for a pilot program to fly a B2-12 helicopter. All in all though, I was just as upset last night as I was the first time when I saw TFA because it was as if I was watching the very first episode again. I don't know why I got my hopes up this time.

I'm sorry, but as a longtime Slashdotter, I keep mentally interpreting "TFA" as "The Fucking Article".

I agree with most of what This Fucking Thread has said about TFA.

With regards to Rogue One (spoils)..

First, I enjoyed this movie and especially liked the Captain Andor character. The ending Vader scene brought some light-saber badassery which I had been missing in my life.

But one thing that irks me about these "middle movies" is their apparent need to tie all the other movies together and explain every last unexplained second of the timeline. Do we really need to see the exact moment where Rogue One ends and A New Hope begins? This obsession with explaining everything's backstory is one of the reasons the prequels were shit, and it soured the ending for me.

Finally saw Rogue One last week.

I'll be honest... I didn't really think it was all that great. It seemed like they just wanted to bring in more money so they wrote another movie for the hell of it. They know that us Star Wars geeks HAVE to go out and see it for fear of missing out (FOMO)

Novice... to your point... it was more or less... forced. By seeing A New Hope one can deduce exactly what we saw in Rogue One. I'm hoping The Last Jedi will hit the nail on the head.
