Title: Olympics . . . boycott?
Post by: 12AX7 on April 09, 2008, 03:17:02 PM
I think Bush should reject the opening ceremonies. I dont think we should boycott the games; but the opening ceremony would be an excellent and appropriate event to deny China. The "deal" was they get the Games if they'd work on their human rights issues. I don't think we said, "Work over the humans, right!"

Concur.

We should at least boycott something, definitely the opening ceremony, I'd go so far as to the say the games too if China doesn't clean up quick, but that's a personal opinion based on my own personality that has nothing to do with reason or logic. Frankly put, I'm pissed off about it, I don't think they should have the pleasure of even having the games in China anymore. The action in Tibet was blatant toss of sand in the face of the Olympic (council?), I think they should move the location of the games. But like I said, I'm pissed off, and that opinion has nothing to do with reason or logic.

Should we propose that the Geekery boycott the Olympics?

I could agree with moving the Games, but I think that's pretty much out of the question. It takes years to get set up, etc.  I wouldn't want to boycott the Games, though, solely for the athletes. If not for that, I could even get behind just cancelling the whole shebang.

This is what I came in to post.

There's no reason to punish the athletes for China's mistakes.

Now if an athlete wants to forfeit their place and not compete to make a political point then more power to them. Even more if the entire team from various countries did this.

The threat of boycotts has already affected some of China's decision-making.  They have admitted it themselves.

That's going to happen, no matter what. You know the air quality is utter crap, right?

Agree with that, too bad that sports is used to make a political statement.

They're actually taking that in serious consideration. Most of the athletes aren't going Beijing until the last minute; specifically so as to spend as little time there in that air as possible.

In related news...

Olympic Torch Relay: SanFrancisco (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-04-09-torch-side_N.htm)

I especially loved this part:

Quote
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said ...

"The route as published was not going to accommodate people's First Amendment rights...

I'm still trying to figure out how altering the route better accomodated people's freedom of speech. Perhaps someone can clear that up for me.

Hey, if any of those hot Chinese athletes need a place for asylum, I'm sure I can come up with some arrangements.

If the IOC stood for something besides dollar chasing they wouldn't have that problem.

I feel the same way about every entertainment industry award show.

Hey we let Berlin have the games when they looked like they were about to go on a mad conquest for world domination?

Look how that turned out.
