Thoughts on new hardware?
« on: June 23, 2004, 03:00:04 PM »

I was gonna stick this under the post your setup thread, then decided I wanted the extra 2 loot. (I'm such a whore ;-)

Anyhooo.... I've been thinking of upgrading my main box lately. And I'm slightly torn between sticking with the Athlon XP series (2800+) and an Nforce2 board of some sort, or blowing my wad on an AMD 64 of some sort.

I'm tempted to get a dual Opteron setup, but that's overkill for me and I already have 5 dual CPU Sun servers.

Anyone have any opinions on the new socket 939 gear? PCI Express?

I'm not going to even consider Intel. They off in la la land somewhere with CPU design.

Video card will be an ATI of some breed. I'm very happy with my AIW 8500 DV. So I'll probably stick with an All in Wonder of at least a 9600 if not a 9800. So far as I know there aren't any AIW versions of the X800 yet but I bet there will be soon enough.

All the other stuff is pretty pedestrian. I guess I'm looking for good MoBo recommendations. I've used Aopen and ASUS pretty heavily in the past. My current board is an ECS K7S5A which I got dirt cheap with the intention of sticking with my current PC133 ram and then upgrading to DDR but that never happened.

My main box has a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW + in it, which is a great board if you're willing to spend over 200 dollars for the motherboard alone. This board supports two AMD chips, and has on board RAID which I thought was pretty cool, even though I already have an IDE controller card that supports RAID.

Other than that Gigabyte board, I've been using the MSI K7D Master L a lot around my network. Again, this is another dual AMD MP board, which is about 200 dollars and only has support for PC2100, just like the Gigabyte board.

If you're looking for a good single processor board, this one doesn't look that bad and has gotten good reviews. The board is for 64 bit Athlon processors. Obviously this is only going to be benificial to you if you go with Linux as your OS.

Make sure you get a PCI express compatible mobo, an Athlon, and ATI

They are necessary.

$200 or so is about the price range I'm looking at. But I'm not interested in boards with older tech on them in that range. One option I considered was getting a $100ish board for the next 6 months or so then going for the full meal deal once some of this new tech has matured a bit.

That's close to what I want. But I want something with socket 939 and PCI Express. So far I've seen some decent reviews of board that are coming, but nothing firm yet.
