how do i go about finding out what motherboard i have?

cos im buying some 512 ram off a mate and it dosent work in his pc. so what do i need to know to find out if it is compatable with my pc? and if i can just shove it in...help me geeks.

I checked your motherboard: it's a 57UP1D-4SS Model 5H17. It does not accept 512 MB RAM chips. You need a minimum of 513 MB RAM per chip. Sorry. Make sure you get 7074L B5 RAM chips, too.

Google a program called Everest. Download said program. Install it. Run it. Discover the elusive brand of your motherboard. Hell, even discover what kind of RAM you're running RIGHT THIS SECOND. Google your damn motherboard then to learn all kinds of interesting tidbits on it.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Dammit, I'm late chiming in. What the hell, do you all get to monitor the forums all day!1!?

Anyways, if you can't see the brand (Asus, Soyo, Abit, etc.,) and model# next to it printed right on it, clean the dust off it with Windex. If still not visible, then it is an ultra cheap piece of Chinese crap and should be tossed. Don't even unplug it first. Then buy a Mac.

How are Macs superior within the context of this thread? You still have to know which motherboard you have before you stick new RAM into it. A friend of mine asks me to help him with his Mac occassionally, and I don't see where it's any easier to maintain than a PC clone.
