Concerts
« on: September 24, 2008, 11:13:38 PM »

Been to any recently?

I've been in college for just over 2 years but haven't really seen any concerts.  That is until last night, when I got to see Sigur Rós play in Detroit.  Afterward, I got to meet the band (the singer is nuts) and get 3 CDs fully autographed.

Ten minutes ago I ordered tickets to see Dungen in Ann Arbor.  My new goal for the next couple of years is to average 1 concert every 2 months.

Has anyone else been to a concert recently?

Dammit Tweek.  You're back for about seven hours and you already broke the board.

Welcome back.   :-D

Did I mention I'm going to Sword this weekend?

Some mod, please make that a permanent smiley for this site.

Bastard.

This one needs to be on here too, I think.

ESPECIALLY for conversations about kickass bands like The Sword.

I saw Dolorata last Saturday night.  The Attack Plan opened and the Valerie something or other band was in between.

Tweek when I was your age I was going to two to three concerts a week.  Dude you are unencumbered with responsibility right now, run wild!

I go to somewhere between 20-30 concerts a year now, back when I was in my late teens to mid twenties that number was probably between 100-130.  I wish I would have kept a log of them all, because for the life of me I can't remember half of them and then I'll hear a song on my iPod or on a podcast and I'll go, oh yeah, I did see them.  When was it?  Where was it? And sometimes I can even remember...

Tell that to my boss, professors and student adviser.  While you're at it, tell that to my bank account.  Actually, I did have a chance to see a free Bruce Springsteen concert tonight at a rally in Ypsilanti.  I'm not one for political rallies though.

Oh, and a bit of an update on my concert plans: Oasis is playing at the Palace of Auburn Hills on December 13.  I got two floor seats for $75 a piece.  Expensive, but whatever.  I really enjoyed the show I got to see three years ago, figured I'd see them again while I have the chance.

I wouldn't say they're all that much like Maiden... But if you don't like old school metal with songs about dragons and wizards, you probably won't like The Sword.

I'm going to go see AC/DC on Dec 4 in Oakland.  Not much for big arena shows, but I've never seen them, so what the hell.  The next concert will hopefully be Polkacide on Halloween at Annie's Social Club.  Oh and Tweek, certainly you have small clubs in the area that will charge a cover of $5-10.  Just find one that has music you like.  And if you only like heavily commercial whores like Oasis, man, you need to expand your horizons and start giving some smaller artists a chance.  Plus there is probably free music somewhere in your area, albeit probably mostly during the summer, mostly.  San Francisco has a Bluegrass Festival that is free each year.  Our city has free music in parks during the summer.  Willow Glen has Dancing on the Streets and Founder's Day with free music.

One application that I like on facebook is iLike where you can add bands that you like and they will give you messages when one of these bands is playing in your area.  Really cool app.

Went to see Bloodwire, Claire Voyant, and Stripmall Architecture (Halou minus Count) at the DNA Lounge in the City.  I'm getting way too old for this.  why can't they start concerts early enough so that I can be in bed by 10pm?

Anyway, my first time at the DNA.  Nice venue.  Great show.  Liked the first two bands and Rebecca and Ryan have yet to disappoint.

I heard they can't play that Guitar Hero song live, at speed.
In the studio it was made up from several cuts, and live they run out of gas.

I'm here to say they can, and did.

They were actually VERY good. I was listening for foul-ups, and didn't catch one. Those boys have been practicing.

It was a 2-hour set. They never stopped running and leaping through the air like acrobats. On one song, I think, the second guitarist fell out of tune -- to be expected, really. Their whole schtick is tongue-in-cheek, very uplifting, comic antics, rowdy between-song banter. I came not as a fan, but the dad of one. I knew every song very well, because I'd only heard them blasted a thousand times during "homework". ("Dad, it helps me concentrate!") So I knew what they sounded like in studio, and after reading all the previous bad press (can't stay on beat live, Herman plays drunk, etc.) was hoping they wouldn't disappoint their biggest fan. But we all left very much impressed and gratified.
