a before consonants - I am a highly motivated person

HOWEVER

if the vowel sounds like a consonant then you use the consonants one - I am a unicorn

It is also technically correct (though antiquated) to drop the leading H in some words and precede it with "an".

Example: Nobody has slapped more asses in locker rooms than Banshee in an hundred years!
