Okay, so yesterday I weat to WalMart to get one last X-Mas present. When I first entered the doors, I had to shake my head. I saw a 6-year-old, talking on a Motorola Razor cell phone. I thought to myself: "What a sad age we live in."
Later, in the same sotre, I was getting food for my rat, when I decided to walk through the toy isle. The traditional board games (games like Monopoly and Scrabble , which had their separate isle) was completely empty.
When I went to check out, the front registeres were all full, so I make the decision to go to Electronics to check out, so as to get the hell out of there. But, electronics was completely swamped, making my wait 5 minutes longer than it would have been if I had used a self-checkout.
Does anyone else see something wrong with this?

I hear ya, but what does that have to do with Christmas, lol? It's like that every day at the one here. I don't even go there anymore until after 0230 (its open 24/7). That early in the AM; the shelves are all freshly stocked, there are very few customers (if any) to pile up in your way, and you get to see a shift of their staff actually working. You may have to weave around a few pallets of goods, or get out of the floor buffer's way, but it's worth it. What normally would've have taken two hours and a LOT of irritation takes about 30-45 minutes and the cashier is usually waiting on me. :-D

Yeah, that's not what's wrong with the season, that's what's wrong with Wal-Mart. It's why I just don't go there.
As for the kids on the cell phones, ugh, it's really annoying. I want to find a device that will knock out reception in my classroom so they will pay attention to me instead of pretending that they're fishing through their purses for something every 5 minutes.
I still love the Christmas Season. I did something really nice for someone this week, with great sacrifice to my own needs. I'm not going to say what, I'm just going to say that's what it's all about.

They're about 200 for a good one, but there is one for 35 that can be made to work with some modifications.

The only good thing about children (not teenagers, the little ones) with cell phones is that when the child is inevitably left in my department I can have the child call the parental unit to come and get said spawn. Usually after I call the manager, and sometimes after the police are called. Nothing says, "Merry Christmas!" like Child Abandonment and Neglect charges.

LOL...Walmart. I remember that place. At least they have real peanut butter there. :evil:

6 year old on a cell: Probably talking to his mom or dad. I don't think he/she has such a busy social life that they have their own phone.
Board games vs electronics. We live in the digital age where people grow up to be loners because they rather interact on networks than face to face. most will pick a nintendo DS and play mario karts online over good'ol monopoly any day. It is also convenient for lazy parents who need a break from their child. It's portable, easy to use, and you can be anywhere, with or without freinds to play with.
Now in my case, I am actually a fan of board games (I have like 20). The difference with the 3-d world is that Cranium is a lot more fun with drunks. But I can understand why it's not the prefered game choice of kids. Hey... if they included a bottle of liquor in monopoly, that could entice them!

Some reason for the downfall of the board game is the single parent family. I can tell you from personal experience that a game of Monopoly® is a lot less fun when only played with 2 people. Some games can't even be played unless you have 3 or more players. I would personally love to get into a good game of Life® or Clue®, but with it just being myself and Bubbles (formerly known as BBCK) it's tough.
Last Christmas, I got her a Nintendo DS®. She plays it once in a while. Mostly, she's all about playing with her friends and that rarely involves electronics. This Christmas, I got her a Wii®. I know we'll play this game together a lot. I know this because we've played the one owned by my nephew. She has already bowled a 296 on that effing® game. My best was a 205... so far. Mostly, I'm looking forward to doing some Flash® programming for the Wiimote®.

My greatest problem with the Christmas season is that is seems to bring out the worst in people, which I'm quite sure is the opposite of the intended effect. Serious, people, stop being greedy, aggressive, pushy fucks. Fights over parking spaces, fights over toys, fights over line cutting....it's stupid. I hate it all. :cry:
Look, historically accurate or not, this is the time when those who are Christian in the U.S. are supposed to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ* and those who are Jewish to celebrate Hanukkah. Not see which family members can outspend each other on useless crap that will either break or be forgotten a few weeks later. KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY!
