I'm planning on doing a writeup of this on my Linux blog, since I'm doing this from a Linux user's perspective forced to use Windows 7 at work.

But I figured I'd share these with you guys as a preview, and to see if anyone has any others they use that I should consider adding to my writeup when I finally do it.

  • UBitmenu: I know, this one's more for Office 2007, not Windows 7, but it's too good to not share.  It fixes the stupid Ribbon UI in Word and Excel by adding a "Menu" tab to it that has the classic style toolbar already built in it.

  • Dexpot: Adds the ability for users to create virtual desktops, something that's been the norm in Linux window managers and desktop environments for years.

  • 7 Taskbar Tweaker: Fixes the broken (or lack of) context menus on the Windows 7 taskbar.

  • Ext2Explore: Lets you read Ext2 and Ext3 filesystems, something Windows should really be able to do out of the box in this day and age.

  • Explorer++: A full-featured, flexible, tabbed file manager that's far better than the default file manager in Windows.  After using Explorer++ for the past month or so, I find myself wishing that there was a Linux version of it.

So as to preserve the continuity of Wunderkind's work, let's limit all of the discussion about it to this thread.

Thanks.

Where I work I have a 5+ year old Dell Dimension E310.  It has a screwy opening in the side, just behind the front face of the case, which has a fan running in it, presumably to look cool while sucking in air.

However, I've noticed wherever I've encountered Dell machines with this particular case design, they ALL make a really annoying buzz and hum all the time, because the fan causes some loose part of the face of the tower to vibrate.

When you sit next to the damned thing all day, it'll drive you nuts.

So I came up with a l337 case mod to solve this problem.

What is that jammed in there you ask?

That's right.  That's a broken off pencil I have skillfully jammed between the air intake grate and the outer shell of the case of this stupid computer.

The pencil pushes against both parts and stops whatever was buzzing from making noise from the fan vibration.

I'm not much of a case-modder, but one thing I'd like to do some time is get ahold of an antique radio to use as the case for a computer I want to put in my living room to act as a music machine.

But I never even considered doing anything this elaborate.  This guy's stuff is amazing.

Been using Swiftfox for a few days, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with its performance.  It's significantly faster than Firefox 3.6, and on-par with Opera and Google Chrome, but it uses less memory than any of them, especially vanilla Firefox.

I figured I'd share it with those of you who like experimenting with browsers.

Okay, I'm not normally the one asking for tech advice around here, but I get stumped sometimes too, so I hope someone has some ideas, because I'm completely out.

Situation
I have a brand new server, a Dell T100, running a fresh and fully patched install of Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise.

Its role is to be a dedicated Websense Express server for a client.

It has two NICs, one that serves web traffic, the other that (once it's working) is supposed to serve up the "this page is blocked content" message if triggered.

However, Websense isn't the issue yet; I don't even have it configured yet, as I'm dealing with what appears to be a Windows issue of some sort.

The Top NIC has an IP address of 10.5.47.205 and a gateway of 10.5.47.133.

The Bottom NIC has an IP address of 10.5.47.206 and the same gateway, 10.5.47.133.

No DHCP, I have the addresses manually assigned.  The Bottom NIC is plugged into a port on a switch that is set up for "port mirroring", nothing special there.

And the bottom NIC will NOT receive traffic.  If I check the "status" of that network connection, it shows a handful of "sent" packets, and 0 "received".

The other NIC appears to be working fine.

Now, ordinarily, I'd be thinking this is a hardware issue, or a problem with the switch or the port or even the network cable.

But it's not.  Here's why.

This is the exact same problem I was having with the old server.

Right now I'm using a different physical server, different NICs, different network cables, and two different ports on a totally different switch, and a fresh Windows installation.

And I'm having the exact same problem that led me to end up buying a new server for this purpose.

Granted, the old server was way underpowered for this role, so as an overall it still isn't a waste of hardware, but I'm flummoxed here.

Anyone have any ideas?  Am I missing something obvious here?

Anarchy / No, that surely couldn't be it

For those of you who don't know me as well as some of the long-time regulars here, I live in central Minnesota.

I saw this article today, which says

Quote
Traffic deaths in Minnesota dropped in 2009 to its lowest total in 65 years.

In a report released Monday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety says there were 403 traffic deaths last year. That's down eight percent from 2008, when 455 people were killed on Minnesota roads.

The number of traffic deaths in 2009 is the lowest since 1944 when 356 people died.

Authorities credit a number of factors for the decline in traffic deaths. One of them is the primary seatbelt law. State seat belt compliance is at a record-high 90 percent. Authorities also cited heightened enforcement and the economy, which has people driving slower and less often.

Really? Seatbelt laws and "heightened enforcement" and the economy?

I'll hazard a guess at the biggest factor, and while it's tied to the "economy" cited above, I think I'll get more specific.

It probably has more to do with the fact that in late 2009, MN had 120,300 fewer jobs as compared to 2008 numbers.

Just that many people NOT commuting on a daily basis alone could account for the reduced number of fatalities -- which isn't really that much reduced, in the grand scheme of things.  Going from 455 deaths in one year to 403 the next is only a 12% change.

Anarchy / Migraines
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:14:03 PM »
When I was a kid I used to get frequent migraines.  When I say "migraine", I don't mean a simple headache -- anyone who's had a real migraine knows what I'm talking about -- I mean a phenomena that pretty much incapacitates you for the duration.

I used to get them at least a couple of times a month, sometimes as often as once a week.

Then, mysteriously, when I was 10 years old, they suddenly stopped.

I then went for 21 years without a migraine, and back in 2004 I started getting them again.  They're not as bad as they were when I was 10, not as severe, nor as frequent, but they're still no fun.  I'm home today because I have one.  It's down to a dull roar now, but still not great.

So I was curious to know how many of my fellow geeks here also suffer from this malady.

Flamer's Corner / Out of ideas.
« on: September 17, 2009, 12:11:16 PM »
Just as some background, I am an IT professional.  More specifically in support, but I can build, maintain, and support desktops, networks, and servers.  I can support, document, maintain, patch, and troubleshoot literally hundreds of applications, ranging from things as simple as PDF readers to things as complex as $150,000 electronic medical records systems for sprawling hospital campuses.

I started programming when I was 11 or 12.  While programming isn't something I do professionally anymore (though I used to), it gives me insight into things a lot of server/desktop/network IT guys don't have.

I have a broad range of experience and expertise in technology that spans many platforms, applications, and hardware.  There is very little that I have ever failed to understand, troubleshoot, break down and repair.

I'm also a leader.  My most recent "real job" had me managing a helpdesk at a company that hosted hundreds of Windows Terminal Servers for thousands of end users.  I liked that job, and I was very good at it.  I didn't, however, like the company.  They treated their employees like shit, and openly tolerated harassment.

I have been unemployed since November of last year.  I have been applying for lots of different jobs.  I have been applying for entry-level IT jobs, mid-range IT jobs, and senior level IT jobs -- any of which I am qualified to do.  I have been applying for janitorial jobs, production/manufacturing jobs, warehouse jobs, bank teller jobs, generic office jobs, and customer service jobs.

In the past ten months, out of the dozens and dozens and dozens of jobs for which I have applied, I have had exactly four interviews for IT jobs that were all really good fits for me, and all four interviews went swimmingly well.

And all four jobs went to someone else.  I just found out about the fourth about an hour ago.

And I'm utterly out of ideas.

If any of you far-flung geeks know of a job or a consulting gig for one of my talents to which I could telecommute, I would greatly appreciate being made aware of it.  I've tried everything else I can think of, I figure I might as well see what some of you fine folks can think of.

Those of you with any serious suggestions or leads let me know.

Or even if you know someone that might be interested in someone like me, pass them my Linked In profile and let me know about it and I can forward them my resume.

I don't know how many Linux users we have floating around here, and among them, how many Slackware users.

But just in case, I just did a full writeup for how to fix KDE in the new Slackware 13.0 release, for those of you who may be interested.   It can be found on my Linux and technology blog, here.

Let me know if any of you try this and get different results than I did; I've only done it on VirtualBox so far, so there is the real possibility that this might work differently on real hardware.

No.  No no no no no NO NO NO NO!

WRONG.

Do it again, and this time GET IT RIGHT.

This pisses me off to the point where I don't even know where to start.  I wrote up a rant on the subject this morning and that still doesn't really even begin to get this out of my system.

It honestly makes me wonder if Microsoft implemented their stupid ribbon UI back in Office 2007 just as a tactic to get OO.o to shoot themselves in the foot by emulating it... only to get rid of the ribbon in the next version of MS Office and say "we've brought back the 'classic' interface by popular demand, because we care! Unlike that horrible open source alternative, who only seems intent on copying others instead of innovating, right down to interface design faults!"

This just makes me want to smack the Sun developers upside the head.  What the fuck are you people THINKING?

Anarchy / Fox News tagline
« on: February 04, 2009, 01:00:38 PM »
I love Fox News.  All my other news feeds are covering something fairly
topical and hard-hitting this morning, and my foxnews feed leads with this:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,487885,00.html

:)

AP: Obama sponsors pay cap bill
Reuters: Ponzi schemes
NYT: Nominee slip hurts health care drive
CNN World: Sri Lanka rebels near defeat
FoxNews: OMG BIG FUCKING SNAKE!

Hilarious.  Fox News and the Onion, the two funniest news parody sites out
there!

So, in honor of that, let's come up with some good taglines to replace Fox News' tired old (and largely inaccurate) "Fair and balanced" B.S.

I'll start.

For the past few days I've been playing around with Obsidian Portal, and I have to say... I wish this had been around years ago, I'd have used the hell out of it.

As it is I just set up my latest Hackmaster campaign in it, and I'm pretty happy with the flexibility and depth one can go to with this framework.

Sure beats setting up my own wiki on my site from scratch.

Anyhow, I know there are a few tabletop RPG gamers hanging around, I figured I'd share a link and show off my own campaign in it to demonstrate what can be done with it.  It's pretty slick.
