Anarchy / Lateness Policies
« on: March 15, 2012, 07:42:46 AM »
So, I figured that the Geek Forum community would be a good place to ask this question since there are so many different work places being represented here ranging from positions held in the IT industry to restaurant work.

My question is regarding the lateness policies that your organization has in place. Exactly what is it, and how is it carried out? Being an employee subject to that same lateness policy, do you think it is a fair policy? I ask because I have been tasked with having to revise an already existing (And badly broken) lateness / attendance policy, and I wanted to see what other organizations are doing from around the country and world.

Anarchy / WE'RE BACK!

It would have seemed as though for some reason there was a variable that was changed in a configuration file that caused the forums to virtually crap out.

All is well now, though!

Anarchy / WELCOME TO GEEKFORUM VIA SMF v2.0
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:33:17 PM »
As you can see, I've made the switch to the latest and greatest version of the SMF Forums. There is some work to be done in order to get the themes in order once again, and that will take some time to get straightened out.

If you notice any weird issues with the forums, please report them in this thread as I'll be checking back to identify and resolve any potential issues that there may be with the upgrade.

Anarchy / Suggestion Thread
« on: July 10, 2010, 11:50:33 PM »
I'm always thinking about ways to improve this place and ways to make things more interesting on the forums here. I'm currently still looking for a way to link this forum database along with a CMS, but that's slow going.

So then it hit me: Why not ask the members what features / functions / changes they would like to see implemented? I'm sure I've had a thread like this in the past, but it hasn't been stickied before!

If you have seen a cool feature somewhere else that you think we should have here, this is the thread to let me know. If you have an idea to make things interesting around here, this is the thread. If you have noticed something that should be taken care of, this is the place to let me know.

For example: It dawned on me that in the past I have run certain "contests" on these forums, but they were always a real pain in the ass because it required me to obtain a product, and the re-package it and then send it to the winner. So why not offer up some kind of Amazon.com or Newegg.com gift certificate instead?

If you don't want to come out in the open with your suggestion / comment / whatever you want to call it, feel free to PM me with your ideas.

Also, I know we all like to have fun within threads, but let's try to keep this one on track. There are several thousand other threads out there that can be de-railed, so try to pick one of them instead.

If you would, please send me a PM with the details. I'm willing to trade favors for this invite.

Entertainment / The Road
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:08:18 AM »
So last night I watched The Road (really... that's a link to the full movie. It uses some kind of jewplayer or something... it says it in the bottom left corner when it loads up) and don't really know what to make out of the movie yet, and it's been nearly 14 hours.

It kind of felt like I was watching Postman, or even Water World all over again, or maybe even 2012 - I don't know. As usual, it's a movie that takes place after the world has come to an end - civilization as we know it has been shattered, and there are few humans left on the face of the earth.

I guess I'm just getting sick of all of these "end of the world" movies that keep on coming out of Hollywood as we near 2012. It's no different from me saying the world is going to end in 2099 since my Windows 7 calender only goes that far.

Anarchy / A blast from the past
« on: December 09, 2009, 09:29:32 PM »
I was going through some old stuff and stumbled upon the following:

Which then made me think of the remix Briz9 composed a year after the initial release:

Talk about some entertaining material... We need to come up with stuff like that more often.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Windows 7
« on: October 22, 2009, 07:42:50 PM »
So Windows 7 officially came out today. I was able to obtain a copy of the release for only 40 dollars since I'm still a student.

So far I'm pleased with what I've seen. Though I'm sure in time I'll notice a bug or two here and there. I'm also a little on-edge about the security of this OS, as it is brand new. Only time will tell just how secure it really is. The only gripe that I have so far is the fact that my dual monitor setup is currently backwards - My primary screen is on the right, when it should be on the left. I've even tried changing the position using the monitor setup utility built in to Windows. I know, obviously I'll just switch the physical location of the monitors to work around this issue.

Has anyone else used Windows 7 yet? If so, what are your thoughts?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Graphic Design
« on: May 27, 2009, 12:12:12 AM »
If anyone here is good with graphic design - specifically logo design - and wants to earn a few dollars, send me a PM saying you're interested and I'll let you know what I have in mind. Compensation is negotiable.

If there are multiple bids for this job, the person who produces the best looking logo (In my opinion, of course) will get the money.

Anarchy / Just so you know...
« on: February 09, 2009, 02:31:52 AM »
Just so you know, I haven't been around a lot lately because I've been working lots of extra hours at work due to my boss being out for a while from sudden back surgery. Oh, and I also have a full college course load on top of working 60 hours a week.

I'm trying my best to balance everything out, so I haven't forgotten about this place if that's what any of you are wondering.

Political Opinions / Unemployment - What's it good for?
« on: January 05, 2009, 02:24:09 AM »
Though this might not be political, I thought it would be best to put this topic in the P/O forum because, well, it is an opinion on something that could cause controversy.

My thoughts on the unemployment system in the United States:
Generally speaking, it promotes laziness and a means for some to sit on their asses and do nothing because they got FIRED from their previous job instead of being "laid off" like they would like everyone to believe. To make things a little more clear, I define "fired" as "being terminated because your employer didn't approve of your performance" and "laid off" as meaning your employer could no longer afford your salary and had to down-size.

I understand some employers will always claim that they fired an employee rather than saying they were laid off in order to incur less fees from the government, but recently where I work there have been several cases where we have FIRED people for performance issues and they still go and try to collect unemployment!

WHAT?

They were FIRED because they were not producing results, and they were warned several times prior to them being terminated that they were not producing proper results and would be terminated in time if they did not begin to produce results. Simply put, they were fired because they were lazy.

The fired individuals aren't people that have a plethora of cash sitting around to live off of either. Yet somehow, someway they are still able to stay out of a job long enough while they go back and forth between us and the unemployment office trying to figure out whether it was a performance issue or an issue with us down-sizing. The economy isn't that bad where a Burger King or a Wendy's won't take you after working at McDonald's.

In the past we have also hired people that were still collecting unemployment but couldn't work anything over X hours a week or they would lose unemployment, yet we, as their new employer had the capacity to give them 40 hours of work a week at the time. There are two things that are wrong with this situation:

1. Their unemployment check plus their wages for X hours working at my store are no where near what they used to earn.
2. Their unemployment check plus their wages for X hours working at my store are no where near what they would get if they worked a full 40 hours with me rather than just X. (X is usually around 12 hours per week)

My obvious question: WHY NOT JUST WORK 40 HOURS INSTEAD OF WORKING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE AND STILL COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT?

My obvious answer: Because they're lazy and want something for nothing because they believe their previous employer and society in general has wronged them and now they should be compensated accordingly.

With that being said, does anyone else share some of the same thoughts / opinions on the unemployment system?

From myself and the rest of the moderators here at the Geek Forums, we'd all like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

I hope you and yours all have a good day of rest and relaxation (If you have off, of course) and if you're stuck working, a good day none-the-less.

I recently purchased this from newegg.com.

My first impressions of the laptop are pretty good so far, though it's only been two days.

It has a very small foot print, about half the size of a traditional laptop, so it's ultra portable and makes it a great laptop to travel with without having to pay upwards of a thousand dollars for it. The only down side to such a small laptop is the small keyboard, but it's something that I can get used to.

So far, so good. As of right now, I think it was worth the $350 that I spent on it.

Anarchy / Weight Training
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:24:39 AM »
After BizB posted an update about his first stab at a 5k race without any strings attached, it motivated me enough to post about some of the goals I would like to accomplish within the next few months to a year.

As I'm sure some of you may know, I've been lifting weights for some time now. Since sophmore year in high school, to be exact. But I didn't seriously start lifting weights until about two years ago after I got out of high school and I had more control over gym time. Here's a picture of me back in May of 2007 when I cut weight from about 180 to about 167 within the period of about a month and a half after I went a strict diet of high protein, low carb foods. (I did this on purpose because I wanted to get more cut).

Right now my workout schedule is as follows:

Day 1:
Chest, biceps, and abs

Day 2:
Shoulders and traps

Day 3:
Back, Triceps and Abs

Day 4:
Quads / Hamstrings and Calf muscles

I have just recently switched my schedule around about two weeks ago in order to "trick" my body / muscles and in hopes of stimulating further muscle growth. Notice that I have cut out any aerobic activity from my schedule in order to ensure I don't burn more than I take in (And you'll find out why in just a moment).

My biggest mistake, which I think a lot of people doing what I'm doing make, is a lack of proper nutrition. Given the intensity that I train everyday and how frequent I lift, I realized that I was short-changing my muscles by about, oh, I don't know 100 grams (Or more!) of protein a day. I've put a big push towards making sure I ingest over 170 grams of protein per day to ensure my muscles have the proper nutrients that they need in order to grow.

My short term goal this winter is to put on about 10 to 15 solid pounds of mass in order to slim down and turn that newly gained mass into solid muscle come February / March. I say February because I've never bulked up and then cut down before so I'm not sure how long it's going to take me to cut down to a nice cut figure again. So best I give myself some extra time before beach weather comes around, right? The key to reaching this goal will be to eat lots of food that contain lots of protein, fiber, and complex carbs among other things.

I hope to add to this thread once a week, highlighting some of the key things that I've done over the course of the week, and some things that I wish I could have avoided.

I'll start off with my shoulder / trap workout I did today:

First exercise - Dumb bell shoulder presses:
Set one: 10 reps @ 30 pounds (Warm up)
Set two: 10 reps @ 60 pounds
Set three 10 reps @ 70 pounds
Set four: 8 reps @ 80 pounds
Set five: 0 reps @ 85 pounds. (It's important to note that anything over 80 as of now I need a lift for. I've done 90s for 8 reps before)

Afterwards I did two more drop sets of dumb bells to really make sure I broke down muscle tissue in that area of my body.

Second exercise - Guided shoulder press:
Set one: 12 reps @ 50 pounds
Set two: 12 reps @ 90 pounds
Set three: 10 reps @ 120 pounds

Third Exercise - Lateral raises:
Set one: 10 reps @ 20 pounds
Set two: 10 reps @ 25 pounds
Set three: 10 reps @ 30 pounds
set four: 6 reps @ 35 pounds

Fourth Exercise - Front raises:
Set one: 12 reps @ 25 pounds
Set two: 12 reps @ 35 pounds
Set three: 10 reps @ 45 pounds

Fifth Exercise - Shrugs:
Set one: 12 reps @ 135 pounds
Set two: 12 reps @ 225 pounds
Set three: 12 reps @ 225 pounds
Set four: 10 reps @ 275 pounds
This is by far one of the lifts that I have lost A LOT of strength on. I used to be able to shrug 405 for 8 to 10 reps without much struggle, but I guess I've let my traps slip a little too much.

Hopefully I wake up tomorrow and things are sore!

Any questions / comments, please let me know.

Slashdot has an interesting poll asking users how much data they expect to retain by the year 2018. My question to you guys is how much data do you currently house within your household, and what is it mostly comprised of?

As of right now I'm housing roughly 437.78 gigs of data; Most of it is archived backups from these forums and other sites I own, as well as a lot of music and videos I've accumulated over the years.

Homework Help / First Post - Please Read!
« on: October 08, 2008, 07:58:43 PM »
After toying with the notion of adding a homework help forum to the Geek Forums for some time, I finally went ahead and did it.

This forum isn't a place for you to simply dump any and all homework problems on us. Instead, treat it as if it were your tutoring center at your school. You wouldn't go to them expecting them to do all the work for you, nor should you expect the members here to do it all for you as well.

Additionally, no matter how stupid another member's question(s) may seem to you, please refrain from mocking them because of their question(s).

With that said, I hope many of you get good use out of this new section, and I hope you can have some fun with it as well.

Anarchy / The Best and Worst of College Courses
« on: October 08, 2008, 07:38:06 PM »
For those of you who are currently enrolled, or have been enrolled in college, what were the best and the worst college courses that you took, and what made them so?

Let me start off with my worst college course that I have taken to date:
Sociology 101. I somewhat attribute this to the professor not doing a great job explaining course concepts in much detail. I wouldn't classify this as being an utterly useless, waste of time, why the hell did I take it course, but it could have been a lot better had the professor been better at conveying key concepts to the students.

Let me paint a mental picture in your head of this professor. Imagine a woman in her mid 40s who has chocolate-cherry red hair, is morbidly obese with lunch lady arms and is a hard core feminist who takes advantage of every chance that she can get to say how women are always being discriminated against. Furthermore, she had only been teaching for several years prior, and was an attorney before being a professor of sociology, and before that she had a slew of other jobs that were unrelated to her professional careers (Such as an ice cream shop).

I attribute her inexperiences of teaching, as well as her non-stop, in your face feminist views to making the class dull, boring, and basically not worth remembering.

On the other hand, there are several classes that I think have made my life different as a result of the knowledge that I have gained out of them:

Take for instance astronomy. I'm still taking this course right now, and I can tell you that already after a month and a half of the course I have learned A LOT about the sky above us, and why things are the way that they are. I'm not claiming that I live my life differently because I know more about the stars, but I feel as though actual use can come from the information in the event that I were to get lost in the woods somewhere.

Another course that I took that I consider to have added value to my life was the second English course that I took during my freshman year. The course covered writing formal research papers, the MLA format that most college professors require you to abide by, as well as how to properly cite sources in papers. The professor was also very enthusiastic and took pride in what he was teaching to his students.

So, for those who have taken college classes before, what are yours?
