Computer Help???
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:20:19 AM »

Ha No, I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

Hello, everyone! My name is Amanda. I’ll start by saying that I have a fairly healthy social life: drinking, dancing, making merry, etc. However, it leaves much to be desired in the way of conversation. What kind of world is it where you can’t reference the TARDIS, Final Fantasy, or the Darmok episode of ST:TNG w/out getting blank stares in return? A sad one, that’s what kind. I’m not saying my friends aren’t intelligent - most are quite bright - it’s just not the sci-fi geekery I long for, I suppose.

I’m not very tech savvy, I'm afraid. My geekdom lies mostly in my music & film knowledge. I’ve been a Trekkie & Star Wars fan since I was able to form complete sentences (sometime between the ages of two & twenty-three). I’m a pop culture junky & video game enthusiast (mostly console): pretty much everything from Super NES to PS3. I teach art, talk to strangers frequently, play a handful of instruments, bump into things, eat a lot of cheese, & may or may not be putting vodka’s kids through college.

Was hoping I could find a community of people I could relate to! This seems as good a place as any.  :-)

Trekker.

B/c you consider a Trekkie to be someone who prefers the original series to all others? What is your criteria for labeling someone a Trekkie vs. a Trekker? At any rate, you can't presume to know what category I fall into, as we have not discussed my fandom.

Anyway.

Thanks, everyone. This is a warm & fuzzy typically only achieved by puppy-holding... or maybe wine drinkin'.

I look forward to proving myself!

Well... no. As a cursory perusal of easily accessible material will demonstrate, it's not what you assumed.

The Trekkie/Trekker distinction is a long-running joke among some ST fans, and serious business among others.

The thing is, "Trekkie" was a wry term made up in the 60s by an observer of the Star Trek fan phenomenon, so from the start it was not a flattering term. Back then, Star Trek fans called themselves, rather straightforwardly, "Star Trek fans". But "Trekkie" caught on, and was eventually embraced by Mr. Roddenberry himself. However, many fans (yours truly among them) always felt that "Trekkie" is irredeemably derogatory, and prefer the term "Trekker", which, after all, has the distinction of being a term invented by Star Trek fans to describe themselves. On someone like me, who surreptitiously defied parental curfew to watch first-run episodes of the original series on a cheap black-and-white TV, the distinction is not lost. No snide little bastard gets to diminish the awe and wonder we felt by flippantly appending the "ie" suffix on us. It's like calling a reverential thespian scholar a... "Shakespearie". Pfui!

But anyway, as I said, Roddenberry himself embraced the term, so the "Trekkie/Trekker" debate has waned (although you might note the particular care with which SNL writers chose to cleave to the term "Trekker" in the legendary "Get a Life" skit in 1986). It remains now a bittersweet little joke among Star Trek fans of a certain age.

And as with many such things, you may verify the veracity of at least some of my narrative with a cursory perusal of the Wiki article on the subject.

But enough. It is late. Maj ram.

the legendary "Get a Life" skit

I don't know for sure, but that skit may be where the "mom's basement" stereotype was born.

I should consult the OED to see if earlier citations exist.

I see what you’re saying. Sorry. RTFM, I suppose. :| I never felt the need to make the distinction, as I’ve heard both terms thrown around rather carelessly. Was just making sure the comment wasn’t somehow meant to be condescending. I was told @ my first convention (albeit haphazardly) that the Trekkie/er debate was more a matter of the original vs. “everything after” preference, Trekkie referring to the latter; some said either term was fine, others claimed differently, etc. etc. Different strokes, as you said. I never really asked for elaboration - just sort of went along w/the joke. I appreciate the explanation, as well as the link! Definitely a classic.

I don't know for sure, but that skit may be where the "mom's basement" stereotype was born.

I feel like I heard Shatner make reference to that on Late Night With Conan O'Brien or some other show, many moons ago. Not positive though.

By this comparison we would rather call ourselves Trekkians? Ooooo. Hi, I'm a Trekkian.

By logical extension, Voyager fans would be "Janewayans".

Which seems to imply something else.

EDIT: On second thought, since "Shatnerians" is derivative of the actor's name, I guess Voyager fans would be "Mulgrewians".  I like that one a lot!  :)

But "Bakulans" is.

Oh man, that's so awesome, I just decided to watch that whole series and become a fan of it just so I can put "Bakulan" on my resume!

Except I pronounce it baKUla, stressing the second syllable, because then is sounds like aKUla, which is Russian for "shark".

WHICH MAKES IT TEN TIMES AWESOMER!
