I had an idea for a new category: Creative Writing. Something like the test questions on some English tests that tell you to write about a given picture and to "think outside of the box". If they can be kept entertaining as well as funny, they would fit into the main purpose of the site. This would be one of those things that would be updated about once a week due to the length and complexity of some of the pieces. What do you all think?

Anyone else have any ideas for new categories that could be added?

Two words:  Rants

I could easily contribute volumes of material on a regular basis to such a category.

That's just one word. God dammit I hate it when people say "Two Words" and then all they do is say one word. Sometimes, they don't even say it! They just type it out! Can you beleive that????

But regardless, rants is a good idea. Everyone loves to bitch at everyone else.

Well, with the bold tags around it when I wrote it, it looked like two words at the time....

You got my vote for a rant section. If we agree on the proposal from the other thread where each writer is responsible for a section, you have my vote for being responsible of the rants, if my previous vote counted for anything that is.

I agree on the need for both the Rants and Creative Writing sections.

Two words: Move the "Recent Forum Topics" menu from the top of the front page. It takes up too much real estate and takes the reader away from the front page. The most prominent thing on the page should be the lead of the top article.

I know my tone is pushy and brusk, but I'm at work and only have a few seconds at a time to post. Insert all appropriate couching and beating around of the bush, etc., etc.

What about a political section of some sort? Do you think this would be going more towards the rants section, or do you think the content within would be different enough to deserve its own category?

I was planning on the occasional political subject matter in my regular rants... I think most of my political rants really just belong in a "rants" category to begin with, so in my opinion they're better off left together.

That's what I was thinking. No matter what, we're going to disagree with the media or the politicians, so they're going to turn into us bitching about them anyway.

Ooooh!

We could also end up bitching about each other's bitching about them.

THAT'S what a "rants" section is all about!

Hey what does everyone think about creating a "Lets talk politics" section on the main page? I know I wouldn't be using it much, but I know some of you enjoy discussing politics. These kinds of articles could generate a lot of discussions in the forums.

I dunno... I tend anymore to post my political rantings in the rants section.

Speaking of which, I'm rantless today... anyone got anything that can really set me off this morning?

I'm convinced you signed up a new account at HN. Perhaps even before you left as Demosthenes!

Does that help?

That's like saying you're convinced the sky is blue.

Yet it's not... bad example.
