I've never bothered trying WINE (although I did use WABI under Solaris for a bit) since I've always had access to another box with Windows on it as well as my Linux box.

I think I'll give it a try though, just to see what it's like.

A lot of people have had great success running Windows applications (like games) under Linux.

But even if you don't... if all you boot into Windows for are games, does that really justify saying "you just can't do much without Microsoft"?

An operating system that most games are written to run on does not equal "the only OS out there".

Hm, I shall try this. Wish I knew sooner, eh? Does it run everything? I use Windows for other things, too. I find the MSN is better, even though it's not quite necessary. I use Windows for things like my cam program, graphic programs, burning CDs, & computer games. If I'm just going on the net I'll use Linux. Still, you can't do AS much without Microsoft. What's a good Linux FTP program? I always use Windows for FTPing...

/bin/ftp always worked for me.

Beats me... I hardly ever use it.  I don't play many PC based games, and I have found that I just don't need Windows applications very much, since so far every Windows app out there has at least one or more Linux equivalents, and the vast majority of those are open source and free for the taking.

So I can't answer that question about how well WINE works or doesn't work.  I simply don't need it, so I haven't used it much.  But I know of plenty of others that have and do, so I would assume that it must work at least for SOME applications.

What, you mean MSN Messenger?  Gah... I don't understand how people can use that crap.

There are IM apps in Linux as well.  LOTS of IM apps.  Even an AIM clone (called "gaim[/b]").  Lots of IRC clients.  Again, most of them open source, and most of them free and just as easy to use.  Probably more secure, too.

Depending on what kind of cam you have, there are a lot of Linux-based apps that work just as well.  Sourceforge is a really great source for applications, and if you use Slackware, LinuxPackages.net is another one.

graphic programs,

GIMP can do (at least so far, in my experience) just about anything that I've ever been able to get Adobe Photoshop to do.  And I know that's not the only app out there for graphic arts... it's just the main one that I use.  There are others.

Also:  it's free.

burning CDs,

Try a quick and dirty search for "linux cd burning software" and see the myriad options available to you.

Many of which are free.

& computer games.

More and more game companies are releasing Linux ports of popular games, and Linux releases of new games.  Though admittedly they are in the minority.  But like I said, I know a lot of people that have had a lot of success running Windows-based games under WINE, and there's always dual-booting as an option.  Personally, I don't play very many Windows-based games, but when I do, I just boot into Windows for them and back into Linux when I'm done.

If you don't bother to try, that is.  ;)

/bin/ftp works for me too.  8)

But if you insist on a graphical FTP client, there's always gFtp.  I normally use the command shell interface, but I've used gFtp and it's pretty nice.  Works great.

Oh yeah.  It's free also.  :)

I haven't found any TPfu apps yet, Judge.  I think it's safe to say that you're probably completely on your on where TPfu-ing is concerned.

Maybe you should ask Chris Wu.

It already has.  It happened months ago.  We're now living in a joke-based quantum singularity that nobody gets the humor of except us.

And the quantum joke field is so intense, that not even laughter can escape.  :(

I tend to use Linux as a server platform, http, imap, qmail, etc so I don't want to be booting into Windows every now and then to play games. But like I said, I'm fortunate to have multiple computers so I don't have to.

That also means I don't really need a GUI on my linux box. I've been running a K6^2/300 for 4+ years now as my server and it hosts a couple sites that get occasional peaks in traffic over 100K hits/month.

Mind you this is all on a cable connection at home, but with a possible 2mbit upstream and 5mbit downstream it's pretty snappy for hosting and whatever other traffic I happen to have. Usually streaming audio to ErrorFM.

Tweak UI is a MUST for any version of Windows.

And while it STILL can't get rid of all the annoying shit, it definitely keeps it down to a manageable minimum.
