All right, geeks, listen up.

You have portable USB flash drives.  If you don't, you should.  Ferfucksake, people, they're cheap enough now.

Take that USB drive and have some fun with it.

Don't just use it to store miscellaneous crap on it.

Okay, that's in part what I do, but there are other options.

Install portable applications like Firefox and OpenOffice.org.

Hell.  On my 512mb USB thumb drive, I have room for both of those AND the latest version of Damn Small Linux.

What can be better than carrying an open source browser, a fully-functional open source office suite, AND a pretty slick open-source operating system all on something smaller than a pack of gum?

What can be geekier?

As a qualified geek among geeks, I say "go forth and do this, yea, verily.  Your geekitude shall be fruitful and spread among your brethren and all shall be well."

I've done the Firefox bit. Unfortunately, I don't go many places with computers to plug it into, so it tends to sit around not doing much.

I carry a Swiss Army knife with a DIP switch setter, though, if that counts.

My Swiss Army knife is the first USB drive I've ever owned.   :P

That's pretty geeky, I must say. I have a 512mb thumb drive as well, but I don't really use it that often because I too don't go to places that normally have computers.

I keep it as a backup while on campus just incase I can't login to my home network while at school. This way I'm not totally SOL if my connection goes down.

Today I did see a bunch of guys walking around with RSA Smart Cards hanging from their necks... now that's pretty geeky.

Heh. I've seen that one. I'm content with mine, in spite of the deficiency, mostly because it's got an extra 10-15 tools that aren't included in yours.

In my mind, there's no comparison.

Sucks that we don't all live in my mind.

I have one like that too, but I find that I tend to carry the smaller one that has the USB drive on it more often, because it takes up a bit less pocket space.  I do keep the other one handy though.  It's normal home is in my satchel that gets carted to and from work.

I find it actually very useful at work- it saves me trips back and forth to the toolbox for various tools when I've got it.

Hell, there's barely enough room for what's in it now!

I've seen that on Think Geek, though I don't think it's very practical. I'd be too worred about accidently messing up the thumb drive attached to the rest of the knife to really use it.

Is it a cause for concern?

I've had mine for over a year now and haven't had any problems.  And it's usually in my pocket when not in use, so it sees some wear and tear and weathers it pretty well.

My iPod nano is 2 gigs, and it uses flash memory, now if only I could format it so it could play music AND store my files  :o

Well, I'm not sure it supports the iPod Nano yet, but here's one way you could probably do it.

Apple limits their capability on purpose, with software.... there's no reason you have to live with it.

My Archos MP3 player isn't flash based, it's hard drive based... but it's 20gb and I keep all kinds of crap on it in addition to 14gb or so of music.
