The media is really making this something it isn't - if anything, Bro. Richards was making a commentary about racism in society and pointing out the audiences hostilities - he's apparently pretty new to standup compared to other comedians, he's a pretty introverted guy when he's not acting (very involved in Scottish Rite masonry research, a smart guy, big reader) and probably isn't used to heckling. I saw a more complete video of the performance, including the guy's heckling before the outburst, that illustrates the situation a little better; I'm going to see if I can find it on teh intranets.

Concur the rest of his life as a public comedian if he can't PR his way out of this right quick, however. Time for him to become a writer as "BOB" intended.

I think you're partially right about his social commentary motivations, and at first he had people laughing, but when he started to bellow out 'NIGGER' right and left, you could tell he hated that heckler and was using that word to express his hatred, which is just completely and utterly uncool. I'm always giving people a hard time for being PC to the fascist extreme, but there was something really crazed about Michael Richards... I thought for a second that maybe his fit sheds some light on how segregation could have come about in the frist place.

If I'm wrong and it was social commentary only driving his outburst -- sans racist rage -- then he's just an egomaniac with severe social dysfunctions. He REALLY did go nuts there.

He kept saying shit 3 times though, which is what made me think he was completely loosing it. Thats what you get when you mix ego dysfunction with critical thinking and provocation, however healthy/necessary the latter may be... ouchies

Having read some of his papers and heard him speak at some scottish rite functions, I would say that Richards is far from an egomaniac. I do think he has the jimmylegs when it comes to non-acted public speaking with a negative audience - most certainly not a spongeworthy standup.

I think he was really shocked by his own behaviour, and yes he did lose control and the n-word is still a very sensitive issue and should definitely not be used in that manor, blah blah blah. Apparently (and note that the video, which was posted by a gossip site, does not show what was going on BEFORE the 'he's a nigger! look he's a nigger!' bit), he was in character beforehand and lost control.

Yes he went crazy there and stepped over the line, but this doesn't been that he's been the Imperial Wizard for years or whatever crazed hyperbole is being spread all over the internet now, maybe he should be forgiven this one time at least. Just because of ONE incident, which I feel he sincerely apologised for, doesn't mean that his lifetime of work should mean nothing now. Calm down folks, and become one with the slack.

I actually got to quote his apology at work the other night when some guy freaked out about how I wasn't sensitive to him being a 'visible minority', despite the fact that I wasn't racist in any way. My only comment to the supervisor was 'I'm not a racist...that's what's so insane about this.'
