Office 2007
« on: May 15, 2007, 01:24:04 PM »

Weird Tingly Feeling?  I have a .docx file and it can only be opened using Word 2007.  Why the fuck would MS make a new file that's incompatible with their older versions?  That's rhetorical btw.  Anyway, would someone with Word 2007 volunteer to receive an email with the file and convert it to an older .doc for me?  Actually it's for my mother in law.

I might have access to MSW2007 -- I'll check.

In the mean time, will this help?

I can't do that from work, because even MS downloads are blocked.  IT is very power trippy.

Well, so much for my lucrative docx converting business.

The file worked fine, Ivan so I didn't need the link that BizB posted.  So we'll still need to test that.

How pitiful is that. Shouldn't the service on that site be, I dont know, maybe coded into the fucking OS? Maybe I'm just too simple-minded, but couldn't they have supported both formats?
I don't code, but I'm fairly certain that could've been accomplished. I understand the whole "stop support to encourage migration" theory, but how about selling an upgrade on its merits, instead of on the absence of everything else.

Oh yeh...  there has to be "merits".

Did anyone else read that thing about how the 'Head of Linux' at Microsoft said that Open Source is dead and nobody uses Linux or Open Office anymore?

The new Word docx format is based on XML.

Quote
Any application that supports XML can access and work with data in the new file format. The application does not need to be part of the Microsoft Office system or even a Microsoft product. Users can also use standard transformations to extract or repurpose the data. In addition, security concerns are drastically reduced because the information is stored in XML, which is essentially plain text. Thus, the data can pass through corporate firewalls without hindrance.

It's a completely new format, and couldn't be made compatible with earlier versions of Word. However, I downloaded the conversion patch, and my MSWord 2000 had no problem opening the docx file and saving it as a standard .doc.

Right now I'm trying to figure out where the "essentially plain text" bit is. When I open the docx file in a plain text editor, it's still mostly binary hash.

THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

The docx file is a ZIP ARCHIVE!

Save the file, rename it to .zip so that your zip application recognizes it, then open up the archive! It's a collection of XML and image files.

I approve.

So basically, any app that understands zip protocol and XML can open the docx file and navigate throught it. I can actually build an app that can edit an MSWord 2007 document!

I think they got this one right, folks.

Hehe, that's the same as one of OpenOffice's formats, I once hurriedly saved a logbook (after staying up all night getting it done >.<) in the wrong format, and took it to college.  Couldn't find anything on converting it, but changing the extension to .zip allowed opening it to see the XML docs inside.

Thankfully I managed to get into a web version of MSN and got a friend to translate it though, it was to damn long to pick through and reformat.
